Budget 2012

I see more 'spec me a cheap car to run' threads what will turn into a massive debates.

And big engine cars losing a lot of value on the second hand market. Already happening though I suppose.

Been like that for the last five years, running a big petrol car is only for the very wealthy or the enthusiast. Gonna hurt in a few years when the car market has an abundance of 320d M-Sports instead of 318is's and 335d's instead of M3's :(

So fuel prices will be going up by a minimum of 4p?

Didn't we all see this last year that they decided to reduce fuel duty by 1p, from the proposed 2p increase. So it was inevitably only a 1p increase. Having said that all the petrol stations still seemed to put their prices up by 1p before the budget announcement and then 1p after. So in effect this was a 2p increase anyhow!!

Over the past week I have seen my petrol station raise it's fuel price from £1.32 per litre to £1.37 per litre, and this rise has been across the park too. So with this in mind do we expect the prices to then be around £1.41 per litre.

At this rate I can't see me being able to keep my ST for much longer. And considering this affect will further more reduce the value of my car im being bummed from the rear by the government well and truly.

To hit the nail on the head even further, my tax is due on 30/4/12, so wonder how much they are going to sting me for this too. Really ****** me off that I barely do 8k miles a year yet Mr BMW efficient diesel driver does 30k miles a year and I have to pay more....

Where is the logic???

Amateur hypothetical question here-

When they say "Income tax will go up by 1p from April 2013" they actually mean 1p in the £, which is obviously 1%, don't they?

So when they say "Fuel duty up by 4p" is that 'in the pound' (percentage) or is it per litre real money increase? Because if it's 'in the pound, then it's going to be closer to 6p per litre increase.

Does the same apply to pints and spirits etc?

Fuel duty up by 4p is per litre.

Maybe I'll take up cycling and lose some weight. It takes me ~1hr30 to cycle to uni, whereas the fastest form of public transport takes closer to 2. (20 minutes to drive, gogo bypass) :|

It doesn't bother me much either tbh - whilst it's annoying 4p per litre could be accounted for (by most) by just a change in driving style. For the forseeable future the cost of motoring will continue skywards, just the way it is unfortunately.

NI also has a massive issue with black market fuel. Same as increasing tobacco taxes massively, it just drives it underground.

I would never use black market fuel if it was available here, just wouldn't trust it and I assume most drivers would be just as cautious. Fake cigarettes only work well because the "real" ones are poison anyway so buying knock off poison that won't have any quality control and may contain poison doesn't bother smokers lol.

As per usual any increase will either start past midnight or pretty soon after the budget and any reduction/benefits won't come into effect until the following tax year. Pure spin to offset the increases with future promises.
