Turns out it has the same Realtek garbage inside and has the same issue.
Straight back it goes. Too hot to be dealing with this now.
Looks like I'll have to live with 100Mbps for now.
I guess at some point I'll have to try an Intel NIC.
Any other suggestions?

Seems like it does run at 1Gbps if I bypass the switch between the patch panel and the router, so it's either the switch or one of the two cables which this Realtek 2.5G hates but my previous PC was fine with.
Shame the eero only has 1 ethernet port. If it had 2 I could live without the switch entirely.

In the end I solved the networking issue by replacing a switch.
