Building My First PC Today! Advice please!

guess what - connected everything, plugged in , pressed the power button and................nothing happened!!
have just checked both 24 and 8 pin power sockets plus little power switch connector.
Anyone have any suggestions??

not sure about your motherboard but if the power supply is connected there should be a light that comes on check that first.
check fans spin as well always a good start.
Could be a number of things.

Have you check the wires that come from your case that go onto your motherboard?

Example:

PLED
SLED
HDD LED

etc

If they aren't wired up correctly then the motherboard isn't going to know that you're pressing the power on button

Check your motherboard manual.

Goodluck

Just read though this thread.

Poor dude, clearly been through the ringer. Hopefully you get this sorted soon. Here is my 2 pence:

- Looking at your spec on page 4 you don't have a discrete graphics card (assuming you will be using the onboard HD 4200), so a 450W is more than enough. I would even go so far as to say overkill. If you want to add a graphics card in the future (4890 say) then the 450W corsair is still plenty with its lovely 33A 12V rail. Here is a rather glowing review.

As for what the manual says, it actually says: "To meet expansion requirements, it is recommended that a power supply that can withstand higher power consumption be used (500W or greater)". So if you want to expand your system and slap in a GTX 295 and watercooling loop then maybe a 500W+ PSU is a good idea, but as it stands 450W is more than sufficient.

- As for your booting problem, I had the same problem with a friend's new PC this summer. Power Button pushed, nothing moved, no sound at all. In then end it turned out that the Power Supply was DOA. I brought over my own working PSU from one of my PCs and the thing worked perfectly. Have you got any alternate PSUs you could try out? It only needs to be 300W or more.

However, before you do this can you please post a high res picture of your motherboard as you have installed it in your case? Please include all connections made, especially the front panel connectors.

Thanks for the replies :)
have checked and rechecked everything is connected but will try again
can borrow another power supply so will try that instead later

cheers - but found ouit from OC that these standoffs are rivetted to the case so even with a stunt hand I would have trouble removing them :)

actually I have another question - I'm fitting the hard drive and the guide for antec says:

Mount your hard drive into the drive cage with the special
screws provided. Don’t over-tighten the screws as this will
reduce the vibration and noise dampening ability of the
silicone grommets.

but doesnt give any indication which are the "special screws"
Anyone have any idea?

Special screws are the long shaft ones with thread only near the end. Rubber grommits are the white washer things.

cheers Evil - I managed to work it out in the end and have installed the hard drive
just need to get this to power up, so will try tonight!

By far the most annoying thing in PC builts is wiring up the casing lights, reset and power button. Second is fitting a custom fan on the CPU/graphics card.

I have never installed water cooling but im 90% sure i would end up with water all over my motherboard and everywhere

You could always short the power button pins. I had to do this as the power button cable was severed on my new TJ07 case. Didn't discover this until I tugged at it to find out what was going on.

In the end, temporarilywired up the reset button to the power pins until I could be bothered to do a diy job. Silverstone did eventually send me out a replacement but it was too much like hard work to fit. Yah, lazy bum International over here.

You could always short the power button pins.

just did this with a case fan attached and its not the psu, the fan spins away

now back to connecting the cables- any tips on order?
also having trouble locating connector for 4pin on the sound card??
will post pics if i still can't get it to work!!

plugged in the power 24 pin power connector and 8 pin power connector
attached case fans
attached front -panel switches including power switch with correct polarity
turned on power supply and pressed power switch and ..............nothing!
The case fan does'nt even spin!!

this is what it looks like at the mo:

Hitman I can't believe you're still trying to get this to bloody work!

maybe have a good read through the system build guide sticky.

Make sure everything is plugged in, optical drive isn't plugged in the photo, wheres your graphics card? leave the sound card out for the mo, it's just in the way.

Your motherboard manual will tell you where to plug all the pins for power/reset/LEDs etc, the connectors have an arrow on them to show the positive pin, make sure they're all in the right way and it should be working.

when you do get it up and running, unplug it all and sort out that spaghetti mess!

Read the system build guide but some of it does'nt apply to some of the components I have and also for a newby like myself there are many key bits missing.
I haven't got the optical drive plugged in in the pic because I disconnected along with everything else and just left the fans and power cables connected to the motherboard but no joy when I went to power up.
I dont have a graphics card at the mo.
TBH I'm just trying to get the system to power up - I'll worry about the connections to all the various devices later :)
Oh, and the cables are the last of my worries TBH !

Man, I told you to work on that cable tidy strategy huh! It's difficult to see with all those cables all over the place. Can I suggest you take a picture with the unconnected cables moves to the side (use temporary tape if necessary).

Didn't you mention it has onboard graphics. Don't suppose the case has a speaker?

Where have you connected the case power cable onto the motherboard?

As people have suggested, you'll need to have the bare minimum connected (motherboard, ram, chip). Disconnect everything else, sata cables, sound card, etc.

This is going to be a process of elimination.

Have you sourced an alternate PSU to test?

Its not the only thing that could be wrong, but it is one of the most likely and isn't too difficult to test (you don't need to actually screw the other PSU in, just make the required connections).

I might be wrong with this but you said that you have the Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H motherboard. The problem is that you dont have that one, you have GA-MA785GT-UD3H. That said as long as the manual is the right one for that board you should be ok.

I cant see it properly because of all the cables, but the F_PANEL is at the bottom right and I cant see any cables coming from it. Where have you connected the power button to?
