Building My First PC Today! Advice please!

Hi, looking at your picture of the misaligned IO shield connectors I think I can offer a suggesstion. I had the same problem. To fix it I removed sound deadning sponge material on the IO shield and then it was fine. Perhaps have a look at yours and see if that spongy sound proof material is on it?

I'm going to make this very easy for you. Remove the motherboard from the case completely and remove all the standoffs you can see. screw stand-offs in where I have put red rings. you need six so either find six or be patient and order some more. Then you can screw the motherboard in taking care to line it up nicely with the I/O shield plate. Good luck with your build mate and always ask here first, we will be happy to help.

There are standoffs in the case after all but how do I remove them?

thanks Ben, but I've been doing that and all its doing is removing the coating on the outside
also tried grips - is there some technique for this??

Try this technique:

step5300.gif

Btw, that is not my hand, I hired a stunt hand - ok I stole it from the web.

cheers - but found ouit from OC that these standoffs are rivetted to the case so even with a stunt hand I would have trouble removing them :)

actually I have another question - I'm fitting the hard drive and the guide for antec says:

Mount your hard drive into the drive cage with the special
screws provided. Don’t over-tighten the screws as this will
reduce the vibration and noise dampening ability of the
silicone grommets.

but doesnt give any indication which are the "special screws"
Anyone have any idea?

Have you tried any of the screws? You'll probably find that only one type will actually fit snuggly and not protude.

Well I've manged to fit everything correctly (I think!)

Going to double check all are fitted as per instrcutions and then fit all the cables
Then intend to maybe take a photo and post on here before I turn anything on - probably tomorrow!!

Thanks to everyone who has given advice including Overclockers who have been very helpful and patient over the course of three phone calls today! - I'm well impressed with their customer service :)

2 points I wanted to clarify:

when I plug in my hard drive do I use SATA 1, and for my bluray/cd drive SATA 2??

also if I have an external sound card attached , then presumably I just attach power to that and by-pass the internal sound card completely??

cheers

I'm not familiar with that board, but don't all modern boards come with just sata2 ports. Eitherway, you should plug them into sata2 ports as I assume you'll have loads spare.

You probably just have to disable the internal soundcard in the bios. I don't think soundcards need a separate power source (maybe then newer ones do?).

While you have a night to sleep on sorting your cabling out, you should probably plan how you are going to cable to ensure you have the neatest(!) and also best air flow cabling.

Pics are now mandatory. And no probs with the help. We're here to help, learn and sometimes mock!

any tips?

Ok, so today I'm connecting all the cables but have run across another potential problem. I have the Corsair VX 450W ATX Power Supply which was recommended by forum mewmbers to me and ok'd by OC when I talked to them about my order. The problem is in my motherboard manual it says; " It is recommended that a power supply that can withstand higher power consumption be used (500W or greater)" However theCorair PSU I've purchased is only 450W - is this a problem??? (should say that looking all the cables in the case I now understand the idea behind a modular PSU!!)

You should be ok with the 450W although I'm surprised that it was recommended for you. The normal recommendation is around 620 ish to allow the system to stretch its legs and to give you a bit more longevity upgrade wise.

The more devices you have, the more juice you need but it doesn't look like you're running too much so you'll be fine. Anyway, you'll soon find out !

thanks Zoos, given what you've said Im probably going to talk to OC and ask them if they'll accept the corsair back and go for a higher wattage modular cpu. I'm sending back the akasa cooler anyway so I could include it with that. I've also been thinking about ordering windows 7 for my new system so I could do that on Monday and hopefully get them both Tuesday to install Tuesday night.

Not sure what you think? Also could you recommend a good cpu for my system. If it helps my planned future upgrades are more RAM and if the prices come down an SSD.

should say I'm not a gamer (not at the moment anyway) but I want A system I can upgrade in the future) and if the power supply is only just enough then maybe now is the time to think about this

Cheers

This is the one I've been recommended by OC instead of the original 450w psu I ordered, what do people think?:
