Building new rig and Raid 0

So the question is, why do I need that extra grunt if I don't do a 3 monitor setup?

You don't 2 x 280X's will run a single 1080p screen at 120/144hz perfect (with much room for future game advancements)

Surely I can get away with just upgrade my current PC with 2 X 280s which should do the trick?
(At 1920 x 1080 I take it?)

2 x 280's in your Q6660 Rig?

That wouldn't work to well... The CPU will bottleneck the GPU's into oblivion (not to be over dramatic).. Let me explain, with a 4770k (lets say) and 2 x 280X you may get 150FPS in a game, in the same game with your Q6660 you may only see 60 FPS as your CPU is working 100% but you GPU's are idling along at 40% workrate. You need a good overall balance.

Also your motherboard only supports x16/x4 Xfire whereas you really need x8/x8..

Games will also benifit massively from a CPU upgrade (i was just focusing on the GPU's)..

Ok understood bud (thanks for bearing with me I appreciate your patience).

Ive always wanted a triple monitor setup. So you are saying unequivocally, I would not benefit from 3 X 120Hz monitors because that would require a lot of grunt.

I.e. its either:

3 X 24" 1920 x 1200 Monitors (for example

or

1 x 27" (or 30"?) 1920 x 1080 144Hz?

Just saw this... surely doesn't seem that bad in terms of slow down? Thoughts doom?

Looks nice.. Smoother than i imagined..

I didn't say it wouldn't work, i just don't want you to have to upgrade in 18 months time when some big title games push the boundaries even more..

The thing i don't like about eyefinity (3 screens) is the bezels and unless you mod the monitors you will get them.. I can't see past them, id rather have a slight smaller single screen myself, but obviously lots of people do go eyefinity so i won't try to put you off if thats the way you want to go..

You would benifit but like i say in my post above, it will test your new rig from the 'get-go' so you may be struggling in 18 months time.. I may be wrong but i just want to voice my opinion on it..

If you have your heart set on eyefinity, go for it.. You can go for 3 x 120hz screen but you need to factor in cost (as 120/144hz screen are still pricey)..

Personally if going eyefinity i'd go for 3 x 1080p screens with slim bezels. Cost effective and will look awesome. :)

I may consider it, but just going back again to the 120Hz.

My understanding is that 120Hz monitors actually display frames up to 120fps compared to say that of a standard 60hz monitor.

So how does it physically manifest itself on a 120Hz monitor compared to a non-120hz monitor (assuming you are achieving in excess of 60fps?)

I cannot "imagine" it.

In theory it works like this:

A 60hz monitor will refesh 60 times a second

A 120hz monitor will refresh 120 times per second..

So if your getting 60FPS on your game on a 60hz monitor the monitor refreshes once per frame...

But if you getting 60FPS on a 120hz monitor the monitor will refresh twice per frame..

Thats why you can only see 60 FPS on standard monitors as that is as fast as the monitor can physically display it.

Does that make sense?

Makes sense sure, but how do we interpret the extra "refresh" so to speak if you are running 60fps on a 120hz? is it smoother? faster?

Currently anything over 60fps on a 60hz is just more speed isn't it?

Ok Im pretty much ready to go except for the monitors.

I just wonder if getting 3 x 120Hz monitors is worth it.
I would very much like to see how these 120hz monitors perform compared to a 60hz one... all youtube videos are not able to portray this effectively.

It will look smoother.. :)

It's wasted effectively, due to the output (the screen) displaying 60 FPS Max, the other FPS is lost..

It sooooo does! ;)

Please show, i want one. :)

You could always buy a 120hz monitor and return it within 14 days if you don't like it? Thats OCUK's satisfaction guarantee.. (though monitors are costly to ship back.

I think 120hz monitors are worth it though i don't know how well 3 would run (in the long term) though i'd very much love to give it a go (if i were in your situation)..

I can't see any slim bezel 120hz/144hz monitors, the asus (linked earlier) and the BenQ are the ones id suggest but they are far from slim bezel.

I've seen you have you eye on Andybtsn's rig.

Just to prove a point,

Here are the monitors he's selling (with stand) and GPU's (similar performance).. if you bought new:

Last time I did raid 0 and switched board, I'm somewhat confident I didn't have to get rid of my data.
I could be making it up, as I did raid years ago with Raptors and some SLC SSDs.

Sorry about formatting (didnt download that plug in!)

Monitor wise I will just use what I have for now until I setup the rig.
