Bump question

Good on the OP for owning up.

I'd probably tell her I'd hit it in my car, but was willing to pay for the damage without going through insurance. That way you might get away with paying a few hundred, or if it goes through your car insurance you'll just have to pay your excess.

Yes, I know it might technically be fraud, so obviously I wouldn't persuade you to do it. But I know that's what I'd probably do if I found myself in your situation.
That's what I'd do TBH. I'd also have got repair quotes done ready for her return.

I'd also book myself a CBT and a Motorcycle Theory Test for tomorrow.

Isnt a CBT a little extreme?
I'm sure OP has already learnt his lesson without going to such extreme measures...!

OP - Like other people said; good on you for wanting to come clean. Tell the car owner as soon as you possibly can, maybe even a note through the door to tell asking them to call you to arrange a time to go over and explain what happened. that way they wont be left with the "somebody hit my car and drove off" feeling, chwing them up inside and making them angry. If you have got in contact with them first, that will reassure them.

If it was me, I'd be open, honest, upfront and frank with them, be humble and explain it was an accident based on a stupid mistake, and that you are more than willing to pay for it out of your own pocket.

Fingers crossed for you, mate :)

Although if you aren't prepared for a ridiculous bill, don't be so forward with such statements. Suggest that perhaps you could source a replacement panel and pay to have it fitted.

Then get one from a breakers yard or through eBay or something.

That would still be pretty costly, so you could suggest they have it filled and sprayed... Or you could suggest that they ignore it and ask what their favourite biscuits/beer/etc is/are. :p

This is technically what should happen, but in reality the OP would be ridiculously lucky if it panned out like that. If someone hit my car, causing substantial damage, and explained that they did so on an uninsured moped, I'd be pretty angry. I'd also be concerned that they didn't have the means to pay what would likely be a very large bill, so I'd probably end up on the phone to both my insurers and the police, which I'd imagine is exactly what the OP wants to avoid.

If on the other hand he handles the situation delicately and does exactly what I've said, I can't see this turning into anything other than a mildly embarrassing incident. Not that I should encourage that of course, as it would be extremely unhelpful. :p

Yep just hope the car owner is understanding is all you can do at this point.
I'd certainly have plenty info/options planned and costed for when the owner comes back

You're committing an offence right now by not reporting it to the police.

Driving offences so far:
- Driven without insurance
- Driving whilst otherwise than in accordance with your DL
- Careless driving
- Failing to report an accident

I would hazard a guess that if you do 'fess up like you should about the truth you'd be looking at 6-9pts and perhaps a £500-600 fine plus court fees and victim surcharge.

The 6-9pts on your driving licence would mean your car insurance premium will go through the roof for the next 5 years, it also will exclude you from applying for quite a few jobs in the next 3-4 years. It will also mean that should you get caught speeding/going through a no entry/accidentally jumping a red light that you will be disqualified from driving for 6 months.

What are you going to do? She clearly isn't going to buy the whole "oh, soz, i uh... drove...my .... bicycle into your car causing the strong metal sill to significantly dent". Hopefully the 50m you managed to ride on some POS noisy, stinky, scooter was worth it!

As others have said, it looks as though the sill is part of the monocoque of the car. It's not a breakers yard jobby. Even if it was, and you were the owner of the car, would you let some random person who's come up with some shady story, start messing around with breakers yards and crap like that? If it was me, the moment i heard the words "breakers yard" i would be on the phone to the insurance company to tell them of an impeding non fault claim.

That would still be pretty costly, so you could suggest they have it filled and sprayed... Or you could suggest that they ignore it and ask what their favourite biscuits/beer/etc is/are. :p

"Uh...sorry i smashed in your sill, i'll go to the breakers yard to see if i can fix it. In the mean time, would you like a biscuit?"

Doesn't sound great...

I think you should try and date her to soften the blow a little and tell her its your way of telling her you want to cave "her" in!!!

How many more times does it needs to be said?? Sill damage can only be repaired by replacing the damaged section with a new section and welded, it is a structural part of the car and fill/spray really won't cut it as the car will be unroadworthy.

Tbh OP you need to report this to the police and take some lube with you you'#re going to need it. Sorry to be so harsh but its true

It's an integral part of the car, you can't just get one from a scrap yard. Having it fitted involves cutting the old one off, welding the new one on, filling any joins and respraying.

It's not a quick or easy job!

This is supposed to be Motors guys, some of you are really showing yourselves up here. Bolting on a second hand sill? Really?

Good for having a conscience. A neighbour was on holiday and whilst he was away someone hit his car quite hard that the front bumper was badly damaged and had fell off. No sign of the offender at all

I hit a parked car and came clean but I had insurance....

In your situation I'd be inclined to say you did it in the car as the other route sounds hellish!

I also took a shot of a a 125cc and 250cc bike of my mates but I did it in wasteland not my street!

It'll look rubbish if they did that.

Depends entirely on the competency of the person doing the job. I've had worse looking damage on a more awkward area pulled out and you would never know unless I showed you pictures otherwise.
