Burns Night - Haggis!

I've only had the mcsweens stuff, but I'd rather eat my own intestines than try that again. Now I draw the line at black or white pudding.

Any recommendations for something I could find in a supermarket that's not 100000 miles away from black pudding?
Haggis clearly isn't for you.

There's no shame in not liking haggis. Different people have different tastes.

A whole haggis is too much for me so when I buy haggis I buy Simon Howie's - four slices for £1.60 - and cook two slices at a time.

I don't mind a little bit of Haggis every now and then, my son would eat it every day though.

We Still buy a stick from Tom Courts in Burntisland, round about £15 for a whole stick which I slice and freeze, I normally shallow fry to get a little bit of a crust on it, lovely. I go from 0 "pucks" a year to maybe 10-20. They often sell the Macleod Stornoway black pudding too....I have to admit that I would eat that stuff every day given the chance lol.

Completely forgot about Burns night this year.

No, because they are considered edible by most people.
No, they only think they find it inedible:

"Scotland's national dish topped a list of least popular foods after a poll of 2000 adults in the UK. But more than half of those surveyed said they dislike haggis because of preconceived ideas of what it would taste like"....

I don't see the problem myself. It's basically just peppery minced lamb with a bit of barley. Hell, it's 2025 so it doesn't even use real stomach any more... and yet people will still happily eat Richmond sausages!!
Besides, with so many cuwte animals being murdered by us carnivores, it's only fitting that we waste as little of the animal as we can, right?

Drisheen, Hogs Pudding (kinda regional variants, so Waitrose probably has them), or you can get vegetarian haggi and black pudding which is rather decent.

I love Haggis. No one else in the house does, so after I had it on Saturday for Burns night. I had it again on Sunday, two platefuls with plenty of mash. I could eat it every week.

Yea good haggis is great.

Macsween ones are ok to be honest.

The Halls or Howie ones are very bland in my opinion.

The best one I ever had I bought at a market in Carlisle, nice big traditionally made.

The Wetherspoons in Fort William used to have haggis on the menu permanently, I'm not sure if that's still the case.

It’s 2025. Anyone still eating haggis is deluding themselves on purpose to prove some sort of point imho

Id eat haggis or black pudding daily.

Spend a fair bit of time in Stornoway during the year, where I will eat it daily. Then stuff the suitcase of 3 or 4 massive logs of it. Incredible.

Richmond veggie sausages are pretty good to be fair. The meat ones, I won't eat but they are probably only a few lips+bumholes away from the veggie ones.

I'll check Waitrose, thanks. Your last suggestion sounds like a good bet. Thanks

I know, but I suppose what I meant was less stodgy/claggy than the mcsweens one we had. Grim.
It shouldn't be stodgy at all. What did you do to it?

Haggis is pre-cooked so all you're doing is heating it up. We take it out of the casing and slice it into fairly large chunks, give it a blitz in the microwave for about 30 seconds and then the chunks break up nicely. Give it another minute or so and then it breaks up really well so back in, another 90 seconds or so until it's really piping hot and then serve. It should be all loose and although not fluffy, it's never stodgy or claggy.

For added goodness, spread it out a bit on a tray, add some black pepper and a bit of butter and then put it under the grill to melt the butter in.

I'm almost dribbling at the thought.

It's already cooked, it makes absolutely no McDifference if you McBoil or McDing it.

I. Always boil the Haggis So tasty.

Oh and Richmond sausages were made by the devil. So horrible. My step daughter loves them though she wont eat proper sausages, where as mine have got to be Cumberland sausages from a butchers, yummy.

Can't remember exactly, it's a memory that's been buried, but whatever it said on the packet and/or internet

Im with you on that. Richmond are absolutely terrible

Honestly, the veggie ones are pretty good, and I’ve tried lots of veggie sausage-shaped stuff.

Probably well inside the category of ultra processed, but they taste ok

Yeah, I'd actually agree... Veggie haggis (despite the insult to my heritage) is probably one of the better vegetarian alternative products you can buy.
