Butchers

Cheaper, possibly. Fresher? Doubtful.

Sainsbury's and Tesco meat counters are good, but they don't come close to a good independant butcher.

There is nothing worse than a bad indy butcher imo, and they can put you off. But once you find a good one and build up a relatingship with him, you'll never go back to the supermarkets for meat

Its finding that elusive good one though isnt it.

Also parking, call me lazy but i just cant be bothered parking 2 miles away and walking or playing russian roulette with traffic wardens in the high street any more. Iv become sick of it all i think :)

I used to go over the meat market but then with one thing and another that became a pain, i suppose iv resigned myself to having a decent selection and knowing what im getting will be decent if not perfect at Tesco or Waitrose.

So hard to find a decent butcher, there are 3 on my street but they are all pretty rubbish. I find the butchers counter at a supermarket in a decent area is much better than my local butchers. My local ASDA doesn't even have a butchers counter.
Morrisons is fantastic for supermarket meat.

My local butchers is held within a farm shop with loads of parking and other cheap local produce available. I realise I'm lucky in that regard :)

Well next time your bored have a drive up Bromley high street and see what fun it is :)

We always use our local butchers, i was a trainee butcher for a spell a long time ago so i know the benefits that a butcher can bring.

He can tell you where the meat was sourced and slaughtered, advise on what cuts are nicest that day, best cooking methods for different cuts etc.

You are paying for the expertise of the butcher, and for a better quality meat that isnt injected with water and raised on a terrible diet.

We spend about £60.00 per month with our butcher, usually buying every 2 weeks.

You get what you pay for, the butchers is far better than tesco's, and guaranteed not to have any water added to the meat to make it look better. but on price it is hard to beat. Personally i dont buy any meat from tesco's, but i do buy some meat from my local co-op far better, and not that much more money

Butcher by far, most noticeable for me is pork sausages, I shop in Morrison's and loathe there sausages, I travail for my butcher but that first sausage sandwich makes it worth it, costs about the same give or take.

Its not even about money, i dont really care what i spend on food, its the trial and error of finding that elusive good butcher, coupled with the pain in the arse of not being able to just park and shop.

Like i said iv just become jaded with driving, parking and shopping :(

I stand corrected on my earlier remark about Tesco being as good or whatever i said, see its been a while since i last found a good butcher.

Emphasis on good - it should be pretty easy to spot a good butcher - sadly there are a lot who just get some vac-packed joints of meat in and couldn't tell you a thing about the meat itself. A friend went down to a couple of butchers nearby and asked about pork cheeks - the butcher told him they use it for dog food. He then enquired about some other cuts like short rib and they just shrugged as if it was some obscure cut they had never heard of.

When you do find a good butcher though it's great. If anyone is ever in london, checkout the food court at Selfridges - some of the lads at Jack O'Shea (including the man himself) are some of the most knowledgeable people you could talk to

That reminds me I was planning to use Bath Chaps to make a ragu of pork. My butcher will get these as long as I tell him before the delivery comes from the abattoir. Apparently it's difficult to get beef cheeks because of the BSE ho-ha.

Supermarket own brand snaugages? :( Im sure teh last time I looked at some they were like 15% meat, how on earth is that a pork sausage

Where I used to live Morissons was where we did our shopping and I was generally happy with the quality of the meat there, steaks were always decent and the prices were sometimes silly low. The dry cure smoked bacon was also pretty damn tasty.

Where we've moved to main shop is ASDA, they don't even have a butcher counter :(
Slightly further afield is Sainsbury's and they had their regional steak on special so spent a tenenr on 2 decent sized sirloins, missus does cook steak fantastically and they were pretty damned good.

Went to the local butchers in the village and they didnt seem to have much of a selection, bacon was ok'ish, mince was fantastic, dunno wether to gamble on the steak as it looked identical to supermarket stuff tbh just with a hgher price lol

Butcher I use is same price as the deli counter at supermarkets but far superior in taste, helpfulness and what they have. But I wish I had my sisters local butcher, amazing deals and actually slightly cheaper than the normal supermarket range (not the value).

Your a lucky guy

I'm lucky to have a top-quality butcher's recently opened near me - I buy as much of my meat there as I can, from bacon & sausages to mince to a Sunday joint. I was swayed the first time I went there and the guy refused to sell me a joint of top-side because he didn't think it'd been hung long enough. I came away from that day with one of the nicest pork loins I've had in years and I've been going back there ever since. He's starting to get queues out the door on Saturday mornings now :)
