Buying a £20,000 car (loan)

If your planning on chopping and changing cars regularly and are concerned about money. Buy older cars which are cheaper. Also buy more fun cars to make up for the lack of "new". Get a dateless plate and your sorted.

15k will get you a really nice Z4.

10-15K will get you a half decent C class.

Over 3 years they wont depreciate as much as a 12-18 month old car. Be a lot more fun with the right engine.

I just looked up the price of them brand new

They cost over 40k and you think your going buy a 12 to 18 month old one for 20k

Well if they loose over 50% of there value in 12 to 18 months I would touch one with a barge pole

You won't be buying a 12 month old 335 for 20k that's for sure :P

3+ year old high mileage ones at this budget.

Rather lick **** off a nettle than get a silly loan for a dirty diesel. If i remember rightly you are only doing 10k a year? Get a decent petrol engine.

Why are you looking at diesels?

Guessing (Without working it out) at 10k a year a diesel would save me around £3500 in fuel costs over 3 years

Because 90% of the market is diesel. It's quite difficult to find petrol ones now.

Exactly this, golf r and s3 are impressive on paper.... but 4 cylinders?!?

It's actually really refreshing to drive a silky smooth petrol now and again

Looks nice (BMW cars sure don't keep there value )

(Apart from having a boring Automatic gearbox)

Boring Auto? You don't get these in a manual, which is fine, because the auto in these is really excellent. A million time more excellenter than that found in the e90.

Don't matter how good or bad the auto box is...

There still going be no clutch pedal and gear lever ....;)

3.5k fuel saving I would bet its more like 1.5k over the 3 years.
I get 20mpg in my petrol car ..If a diesel does 35 to 40mpg that would be more then 1.5k saving over 3 years/30k miles..
Maybe am expecting to much with thinking a diesel would do 35 to 40mpg, maybe a diesel would be more like 25 to 30mpg

Never owned a diesel car so i don't really know how many mpg it would do

Yep. Agreed. Man-math is a bit off on this one.

I averaged a little under 40 mpg when I had my 335d. But lets say, for arguments sake, that he can average 40 mpg. And a similar powered petrol equivalent can average around 28 mpg (which I believe to be genuinely generous for both).

Now, in a 340i / 335i you just would use super unleaded, and standard diesel in your 335d. So local prices to me, today, are £1.169 for Mom99 and £1.149 for Tesco diesel (probably the most likely source of both fuels).

Over £10k per year, the diesel is £592 cheaper. So looking at around £1777 better off in the diesel over the 3 years.

Come back when you have driven a ZF8 Speed mated to a decent engine.

Granted In a fiesta st or focus rs an auto would ruin it however In a big diesel saloon car the last thing you want is a manual. A manual in these types of cars makes them feel like cheap Mondeos

He's not coming back lol
