Sometimes they can't who though, people complain that they get hassled by staff then complain when they don't, if you want help then you can simply just ask, imho this is far better than getting disturbed.
There is a big difference thou between hassled and ignored totally, and this was much closer to the latter than the former. I don't mind the "can I help with anything" or the "if you need anything my name is X come and find me" approaches, thats what we got in every other dealer but not BMW...
