Bye Bye Game!

I'm not fan of HMV but at least their management is trying by bringing in new lines like their expanded technology areas where you can buy (overpriced) headsets, iPhone cases etc, rather than just relying on CDs which in a few years are likely to be as niche as records.

I have got a good few deals:

Gamestation
Killzone 3 steel Book collectors, pre-owned -£7.50 (2.50 on card, so paid £5)
Sin & Punishment: successor of the skies, pre-owned - £2.98

GAME
Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate edition, new - £19.98 (had £12.50 on cards so paid £7.50)

If (when) Game close it has the potential to have quite a significant impact on the UK games industry.
Unlikely, on-line retailers, both mail order and download based will continue to account for the vast majority of games sales in the UK with other retailers like the supermarkets offering physical retail for the top 10 AAA type titles.

You may even find with the disappearance of Game the occasional local independent reappears specialising in less "blockbuster" titles.

Game is going bust because outside of occasional drop in business and second-hand console games they're not selling enough to turn a profit, which leads me to believe they're not selling enough to have an effect on anything much other than aunty Mable looking to buy a game for little johnnys crimbo pressie. "Gamers" will quickly change to buying elsewhere, it's not like Game were the only source for games. I don't think your average PC or console gamer is going to be found stumbling erratically around the local shopping centre mumbling that they are confused and have no idea how or where to buy a game from. :)

Like I say, there's a certain pleasure in seeing the supermarkets and on-line retailers do to Game what Game did to everyone from EB to local independents.

Athanor, I'm not saying Game's closure will have a serious detrimental effect on the UK games indstry, and neither is RPS. I'm jst saying it's very likely there will be some kind of effect, and at the very least, there's no call for gloating.

Another place with rip-off joke prices. Wont miss them either if they go belly up.

I do however sympathize with the people who would lose their jobs. Wonder if that company will wake up and smell the coffee...Not that Ive been inside one for 3 years!

If you haven't been inside one for that long, you can't really judge fairly, can you? I don't think that's a fair observation at all.

Like I said earlier in the thread, some things can be had at a good, competitive price, but unfortunately, other things just get marked really high. It's a poor way to conduct business, but they have improved over the years. And if you ask for a price check, 8 times out of 10 the price will have changed, but been missed during price adjustments.

I agree. It seems to be totally mis-managed.

As has been said, i wouldnt mind paying an extra 5-10% if i saw something in HMV and could buy it that day but whenever i go in there, everything i might want to buy is just ridiculously overpriced when compared to the internet.

For example, i ordered Transformers 3, triple play edition, from Sainsburys online soon after release for £12.99. i went in HMv the other day and noticed the same product is STILL £19.99??

It is just bonkers, and i can't understand why they don't change their business model.

The same applies to GAME. I often see titles priced at 50-100% more than the same title online.

Yep, completely correct. Bluray is one area where this is all too true. Very few titles are cheap. They do have a 2 for £20 offer though, which is not too bad, and has a good range.

I've been after the Star Wars Blu-ray set as I have some High Street vouchers which only HMV will accept. Except I've been trying to buy from HMV since Xmas, but each time, I'm told there's no stock.

Funny how Argos, Asda, Amazon, Play, and Uncle Tom Cobbly and all have stock, but just HMV don't.

I'm hoping it's just a temporary blip, and not a foretaste of things to come for the last remaining entertainment specialist.

I can explain this for you. A few select suppliers have very specific requirements, before they will send us stock. We had a fanatstic offer on the bluray star wars boxset for a while, but then we had trouble with our credit (which was well publicised) and some suppliers no longer wanted to play the game. I think there are negotiations with these suppliers at the moment, which will obviously help both parties. Unfortunately, until that's settled, they will not send us stock of sold out items.

On the subject of game, I went in today and the staff were messing around with each other, and I was waiting at the till with nobody to serve me, despite them standing five ft away, in plain sight. I said 'can you get on till please?' and a girl jumped on.

Got Fifa 11 on PS3 for £2. Might as well. There were quite a lot of god offers on ps3, but nothing really for PC gamers. Couldnt even find what I went in for, (Red Orchestra 2).

I was in HMV earlier today and was shocked to see the 'Stargate: SG-1' boxsets on the shelf at £45 and 'Stargate: Universe series 2' at £50, and that was DVD not Bluray either.

Don't get me started on many 'niche' TV boxsets. It's embarassing. However, supplier costs are ridiculous, and that's being honest. We always recommend our website, where the same items can be 50% cheaper. Just checked SG-1 season 1 myself, and it's £25 on the website. It's just as frustrating for us. A boxset i've wanted for ages called 'Family at War' is £100 in store. It's £50 on our OWN website.

Will be interesting to see how online prices are affected by the new tax laws that will affect the channel islands.

Will be gutted to see them go that's for sure! Either there's a lot of cheap skates here or I'm stupid with my money  Never thought they were that over priced?!

I think they wete just under-priced by online competitors.

They're pre-owned were no good though, and they always sold at RRP.
