Bye Bye Game!

saw the news so just spent all my points on a couple of BluRay's before they disappear,

I miss seeing all the different shops, towns are turning into pound-shop wastelands and a couple of friends who had shops have been forced out by rent increases to be replaced by chain store coffee shops and the like. Bigger places just get beaten down by bad business practice, smaller sole traders by rent increases as bigger property groups buy up all the smaller concerns. In turn the property companies shoot themselves in the foot as the rent increases leave the shops standing empty.

This.

After redeeming my son's points at Game I noticed many shops (and not all just small ones) sitting empty in our local town bringing back memories of similar sights in previous decades. Sad times, and I will miss having a game dedicated shop to browse in (assuming they fold - I think CPR is under way). I don't mind paying a little over the odds for goods but double is too much these days.

What I found was kinda funny -

I had actually preordered a few games at Game, (although I wasn't particularly interested the staff pointed out it was free so I might as well) and they'd text me when they're out. They never did >.<

Only time i've been in game the past few years is to buy Raving Rabbids figurines for the woman..

Oh and to laugh at the invasion of Excalibur Publishing simulation games.. (not counting farming or truck ones they're not made by em!)

I havent bought a game off them since last year, most of my orders are from other popular etailers. And i havent been in their stores in years, not since the internet took off.

Not bought a Game forever from them.....

Overpriced always have been. A mixture of different things in the market, shame though from child-hood memories of this and EB.

Hopefully they will sell stock off at cheap!

There were three GAME shops as one point in my town. One of them was nextdoor to HMV - whilst the choice of games wasn't as good, it was cheaper.

Wonder if OCUK had the buying power to either buy out Game or at least get a lot of cheap stock from them if there really going out of business. Presuming ocuk still wanting to build up their games department.

Still probs buy games elsewhere personally like but might drive prices down from ocuk if they got cheap stock of say skyrim and some other titles like that.

Was in Gamestation over lunch today, saw Skyrim pre-owned for £12 more than I paid for it new. Fantastic deal...
Did pick up PGR4, Timeshift, F1 2010 and Crackdown for the princely sum of £8 though. Good old stock clearance.

Anyone who thinks this is a good thing may want to read this piece on Rock Paper Shotgun.

They don't exactly conclude that it's a bad thing though, more that it leaves a lot of things hanging, some with potentially unpleasant consequences depending on how things fall out.

They just seemed more and more irrelevant to me in recent years. I've bought my last two consoles from Amazon and saved over €100 a pop on each compared to Game's prices.

Still hoping there'll be a nationwide fire sale. That PS3 slim bundle looks tempting as I've been looking at replacing my phat for a while now.

Yeah, but that's a good enough reason at least to not gloat about it, which some people in this thread have been doing. If (when) Game close it has the potential to have quite a significant impact on the UK games industry.

Heh, actually this is the one and only reason I've ever shopped at Game in the last ten years; to trade in consoles to get newer ones. But yes, without trading in I'd have been better off going with Amazon or Play.

With HMV, Its not the prices I find terrible, its the look of the shop, they are always messy, badly labelled with one product in 1 place costing £x and then the other side of the shop the same item cost £5/10 less/more! Its crazy!

an ocuk on every high st :)

HMV have the same issues in my opinion and may well suffer the same fate unless they become more competitive.

Another place with rip-off joke prices. Wont miss them either if they go belly up.

I do however sympathize with the people who would lose their jobs. Wonder if that company will wake up and smell the coffee...Not that Ive been inside one for 3 years!
