Caffeine Detox Time

Where's my update?

Tough crowd.

Still caffeine free. Yesterday I didn't train which meant I didn't get that late morning boost from exercise. Still energy levels were pretty consistent. I think that's the best way to describe the non-caffeine life - your energy is consistent and there are less peaks and lows.

If you haven't watched Matt D'Avella's lastest video, looks like he is going to do a 30 days caffeine detox this year as well (he must have seen this thread and been inspired).

He's currently balls deep in a pile of caffeine after a rather extreme relapse. RIP LiE.

RIP. If I do start "using" again, it will be purely for gym gains.

Watched it last night. I am actually tempted to give it a go, not because I feel I need the "consistent" energy, I actually don't seem to have any problem with that. It's more that I want to be able to feel the effects of caffeine again when I do drink it.

I drink a lot of tea at work so could easily switch to decaf there which could be a first step.

I enjoy doing experiments and trying things, maybe give it ago?

Maybe next month. Getting back into the gym is enough of an experiment this month :p

Yea it's best to do 1 thing at a time.

What's hard when you take caffeine out of the equation is what do have as a pick me up. I'm coming down with a cold and would usually have coffee to help me feel less ****.

I quit caffeine for a couple of months last year and felt better for it, I remember getting headaches and lower back pain for a week or two while I was going through withdrawals which was odd. I don't even drink particularly much either, 1-2 coffees a day and sometimes none on weekends.

To be honest the strength of those coffees could be more telling. The coffee I had in the morning was a double espresso, I'd estimate around 150mg caffeine. Most people who have an instant coffee will be getting around 50mg.

The lower back pain is normal, this is caused by your bowels getting upset at the lack of coffee and some mild constipation.

I assume your back "using" again? :p

I think I need to look at cutting down a bit, drink about 5 cups a day (can be as many as 8 sometimes) due to working in an office and folks always offering to make drinks.

Yesterday I had two cups before 12:30 and then due to meetings and workload, didn't have another cup. Went home with a splitting headache. Made a coffee when I got back and within 20 minutes of drinking it, headache was gone.

I find the dependency and constant need to get the fix a real big turn off tbh.

I realised this morning when I got up to make a coffee that I didn't drink any caffeine yesterday, by accident :p So I've carried it on today. I had a slight headache this morning but that could attributed partly to having a few pints and not enough fluids in general yesterday. Other than that feeling fine. I will continue.

ooohh, caffeine detox friends!

I used to drink 5+ cups a day at work , switched to green /herbal tea instead.
Found that I slept better, I do feel the difference now when I do have a coffee when required for long hours / staying awake etc.

This is one of the things I am very interested in being caffeine free. When I do need a boost, I will definitely feel it!

This morning I've been feeling the drain of this damn man flu (cold) so I've had my first cup of coffee in 10 days. 30 minutes after drinking it I feel the full hit, so looks like the detox was good in resetting my tolerance. I don't plan to have anymore coffee over the weekend to prevent a habit creeping back in, so for now I'll use it as a tool and potentially apply it to the gym at some point.

That's good to hear after only 10 days. I was talking to someone at work about this earlier who says she borderline gets the shakes after a strong cup of coffee. 'If only' was my reply...

Was she having a large Starbucks with an extra shot with the equivalent of 20 sugars. Probably is my guess.

Most people won't know how to properly dose caffeine. The most I've taken is about 600mg but that was in competition.

I'm going to stop caffeine again. I've been trying to pin down the trigger for my mild IBS and while detoxing and then going back to coffee I'm very confident that caffeine is the trigger. I've had it on and off for over a year and all the times it has triggered there has been a change/increase in caffeine consumption. I guess this is the down side of high caffeine sensitivity. Yesterday was the first day without caffeine, this is going to be tough.

Coffee and it's caffeine is known to exacerbate IBS symptoms.

Yea definitely. When I was having a can of monster zero as a pre-workout my IBS was pretty bad. Prior to that it was when I bought a pre-workout supplement. Between those 2 incidents I have been drinking coffee with no IBS issues, but I imagine my body may have just got used to it. However as soon as I started drinking coffee again after my detox my gut said nope.

Hangover didn't help, admittedly. Nor did the visit from @BennyC demanding le cafe.

@BennyC is a bad influence that's for sure. Fuelled purely by cakes, ice cream and coffee.

The past couple of days have been really tough. I've been feeling good energy wise but my mood is junk. Can't get motivated to work and have been smashing the decaf tea to help with the cravings.

I've been falling back into old habits, drinking 1 in the morning and another later in the day. Treating myself on the weekend to extra shot lattes from various coffee establishments. It didn't help that I was ill for 2 weeks and massively tired. My guts haven't thanked me for it that's for sure. Starting today I'm going to have to cut it down, hoping to find a balance where I can co-exist with caffeine without mild IBS.
