Cages outside pub?

I'd offer a room but the wife has forbidden me from bring people from the internet to the house :(

Haha no worries mate, theres two of us going.
Had a look at some of those hotels you mentioned but they're about £60-100 per night!
Well tough it out for the first night and if it's that bad then we can always pay the premium. :(

If you want a hostel check the one on Donegal Road - it's the one with the international hostel license thingy. Also even if the Tavern is still open, which I think it is, you won't be going there whether or not you want to.

What does that mean?

They won't let you in because they don't know you. It is/was a paramilitary ran pub and no one in their right mind would want to go to it - and you'd only get in if you did want to if you knew someone. There are a few of them around, the ones in the centre of town often have the extra security ie cages, cameras and window bars to stop things like petrol bombs (edit - see the burn marks on the camera inside the cage?), and break-ins.

I can see that that might put you off Belfast, but consider your options too - as that particular bit of town is quite run down and I think would create an unpleasant image in your head before you even arrive.

There are however loads of really nice pubs and clubs in Belfast that will be welcoming, pleasant and I dare say will make you want to come back to Belfast.

If I were you I'd stay in the Donegal Road hostel (just checked the site and it appears that there are rooms available) - it's a 2-5 minute bus ride from the centre, 20 minute walk and is rated highly by anyone who I've heard has stayed there. It's close to pubs such as Laverys (a popular with students, pensioners and all those in between, often all in the same place - great atmosphere), the Empire (a music hall come pub that can be really nice to unwind in and has live entertainment most nights), the MClub (a reasonably trendy club if you want that sort of thing), Auntie Annies (a small traditional pub which is always busy) and the Stiff Kitten (mainly students but the food in its pub is great). Once you head into town there are other great places too.

Thanks for that buddy, I'll take into consideration.
I'm just about to have a look at the hostel you mentioned and I will keep an eye out for the pubs listed.
Don't worry about it putting us off, I'm not from the nicest of places and hes from Slamanan! haha

doesnt look to inviting but thats a picture and might be totally different when inside.

a pub near us has a boxing ring upstairs for sorting problems out :D

Firstly, WHEY!!! Coming over for my birthday are you? :D

But yeah in all seriousness iamdjdz's advice is the the best guide to a good weekend out in Belfast really (apart from the m-club but thats just as iv been turned away a good few too many times for basically being english which is quite funny, probably better on weekends though).

In your original post you seemed to have picked the some of the worst examples of Belfast, in and around the area's of the shankill road and the falls road which is the bit with the massive "peace" wall (pretty much looks like the berlin wall though someones back garden). Just stay the hell away from that sort of area unless you really know the sort of people around there... (I ended up in a pub on the falls a few months ago and got threatened for being english which was urm fun... Not making that mistake again)

Anyway come to Belfast! Other than the very divided areas its an awesome place!

Aw I was trying to keep it a surprise! Haha :D

Thanks for the advice, this is my first time in Belfast so was unsure where to go, the Hostel will only be a bed for the night and with any luck... ;)
We will be steering clear of the area pretty much all day, sticking to the main centre.
Hmm they don't like the English, what about the Scottish? :)

Awww thanks! :D

Oh my! Well all the women love "foreign" accents so i doubt you'll have any problems ;)

I dont think that is there any more.

Union street on the corner now has a Gay Bar - so you should be ok round that area.

Also that hostel looks like it backs onto the biggest gay bar in belfast " The Kremlin "

Saturday nights the night club part opens to everyone and goes onto around 6am.

Good luck :p
