what do you actually do on a helpdesk job? is it just answering phone calls all day?
ive been looking at getting into an IT career, but i want to be hands on fixing stuff instead of answering phones, i cant really explain how to do something without actually doing it
I realise you posted ages ago but didn't see the thread, but nevermind.
It all depends what type of helpdesk it is really and for what type of company whether it is a large business or medium sized.
I've worked on the helpdesk for 3 months now in my first job out of college and i find it ok. Some people think that the helpdesk job is sat with the phone glued to your ear all day, mine isn't some may be.
I work for the council and it is as a trainee on the helpdesk, yes i answer the phone but there are 4 of us and we work on a rota on the phones. It doesn't get too busy either even with 700+ staff to support most of the time there is only one call at a time, but during peak times like monday morning when everyone has forgotton the password over the weekend it does get busy.
Even when the calls aren't coming through there are jobs to be done, if the job is to big to be fixed over the phone we log it and come back to it when we aren't rota'd on the phone or pass the job over as well all share the logging software.
We also get to go out to external sites dotted around the borough, like local housing offices, leisure centre's etc. Nice to get out and meet people instead of being sat on the end of the phone where i sometimes find it harder to communicate at my best, and i get my millage paid for
I know you said that you can't explain things without doing them, we as i am sure nealy every business uses some sort of remote admin software so we can do it for the user instead of spending 5 minutes explaining what the start menu is. Don't worry about it.
Might just give you an insight to what its like, any questions that you have will try and answer them as i know i didn't know what to expect when i started tbh. I know i don't have the most experiance but i've learnt what the jobs about.
Try and see if you can get some work experiance to see if you like the job, i know it might be like going back to school but we just got someone starting today (didn't turn up surprise surprise) but its their missed opportunity.
