Cambridge Analytica

Oh no... what has happened since the dawn of rulers and the ruled is so surprising... please contain ye self.

Making this a bigger story than it should be, just makes me think that someone wants to hide something that hasn't gone well...

It's surprising how many people don't know that Facebook sell your data and freely post almost all aspects of their lives online in complete ignorance.

I only use Facebook when I need too and I use a dummy account in a different name, and before anyone says all these companies do it, no they don't.

There is a big difference between selling actual personal information and selling statistical information based on personal information.

I thought a comparison with other domains was valid -

Facebook same sanctions as Kaspersky ?

Did not think it was worthy of a thread,
but with all the concern about Mr Putin, we now find the USA election was partially managed courtesy of Facebook users (which demographiic - s'flake ?)
who downloaded free quiz apps with prizes, that harvested their data to be sent to the likes of Cambridge Analytica for voter targetting/profiling. ...
who need the Russians ?

Its executives have also been filmed by Channel 4 News suggesting it could use honey traps and potentially bribery to discredit politicians.

The company denies any wrongdoing.

Is this not illegal in a very black and white way? Or incriminating at the very least?

I am yet to go into the detail of this story, but by now was it not fairly obvious what Facebook did with your data? These stories were around pretty much from the start. I listened to a podcast that spoke to former employees around 2011 and pretty much walked away after I heard what went on.

Back in the day people used to post quizzes like "Find out which political party is for you". Even before hearing that podcast it was fairly obvious to me this data would get harvested.

I still have an account locked to the highest setting, don't post anything on there and just use it to read a couple of hobby related groups. It's annoying because these groups are amazing.

so what kind of audit/qualification do FB perform for (Android etc) apps that will be accessing the FB account, if any ? or they have carte blanche to grab what they want ?

To start off, understand that anytime you log in with Facebook on a site or app other than Facebook, you’re giving up data. These apps and websites connect to the Facebook platform, which allows Facebook to expand its reach in exchange for an easy login solution and some user data for the app maker. Once an app is authorized through the Facebook platform, it remains authorized until the user says otherwise even if it’s only used one time. If you’ve never gone into the Facebook settings and actually looked at the list of apps you’ve authorized to connect to your Facebook account, you might be surprised to see how many old, unused apps are lying around, possibly still collecting your data

"Facebook in no-such-thing-as-a-free-lunch shocker" - can't understand the hysterical reaction to this in some quarters ... no matter what benevolent-sounding B.S. they might spout about 'connecting the world' or whatever, providing the data for this kind of thing is Facebook's raison d'etre - that's where the big bucks are, not in providing Joe Public with a platform for sharing pictures of his dog/dinner/children etc.

And really, perhaps I'm being cynical here, but would some of those getting outraged about this really be giving that much of a damn if Hillary Clinton was President instead of The Donald, or if the UK had voted to Remain?

- but this is data beeing harvested via 3rd party apps, not FB themselves
scenario - identify vulnerable wealthy victims, target them with scam phonecalls (boilerrooms), malware emails , fake credit card/loan applications and see what cash can be obtained

..... or is that too much scaremongery ?, given that malware on a PC can accomplish similar goals.
