Can anyone beat my spec? I saved for nearly 2 years

Check the games you are gonna be using (if its mainly flight sims) actually support SLI/multi GPU - for a long time FSX did not work with multi-GPU and not even sure it scales that well now due to the CPU useage - and its not uncommon with sim games not to work well with multi GPU. So the 590 or 400/500 series SLI may potentially be a waste of money.

Also personally I don't have a high regard for Asus motherboards (tho I have no problem with Asus as a company) but their motherboards have never inspired me with confidence, my money would probably be on gigabyte or evga.

Dude, the GTX 590 is two 580s on the same card that have been brought down a peg in order to deal with the massive power and overheating issues it has.

And the earth is flat lol.

What overheating issues? Mine sits cool as a cucumber lol. If your talking about the muppets overclocking and frying the card in the early days then yes thats an issue. As long as you use the latest drivers you are fine. Just dont alter the voltages in an attempt to overclock.

Buy the 590. You owe it to yourself lol. Listen to the man in the room that has one hahaha.

I don't have much to say on the video card matter..don't really game a lot anymore and my personal gpu is a 5870 lol but i've built a few gaming rigs with the 590 and have not noted any heat issues at all.

BTW.. how does the 5850 and 5870 hold out on the latest gpus? Do they get totally pwned or are still in decent running? I just upgrade my gpu now and then but like i said, the most demanding game i've played this year is Mafia 1 with a modern mod for like 4 nights lol.

Both are still fairly decent, tho they won't hold a candle to a heavily overclocked GTX580 but hang in there with anything else.

I thought this was going to be an SR-2 tri-sli build.

Disappoint.

This. Exactly this. The entire thread should be locked to avoid further dolloping of disappoint.

Sounds like a guy with a dead family member decided to build a rig after a single YouTube video and just try and buy the most expensive everything without consideration for use or tact.

It's like he is trying to say "I have a sword made entirely of gold!"

To which we would reply "Yes, but ours are sharp" :)

I don't get it. The guy comes in asking for advice yet somehow its turned into more or less dissing his choices and making it seem as if hes showing off?
Not everyone knows 1200w is overkill for example and since hes saved two years maybe hes just trying to get the best at the moment for the next two yrs down the line? My only beef really is the lack of bigger storage other than the SSD and the 1200w psu which is not needed and would not be effeciently used at that wattage level.

But his would be shiney and not rust lol

To be fair, he actually comes in asking whether anyone can beat his spec. If you're going to do that here you expect something pretty damn good.

maybe the advice for someone to beat his spec so that his savings of nearly 2 years doesnt go down the drain by buying things that could have been improved with the help of the people of OCUK forums?

I designed it simply for FSX (flight sim for those not in the know) FSX, GEX, UTX, REX, Traffic X Mahoooosive LCD need i say more

To be honest there are quite a few things id swap on that list, if you want to be close to my rig lol.

Hate the case. Id go for an obsidian with customer water cooling. I say Obsidian as thats the case I should have bought (will buy next)lol.

As said swap the ram for 2 x 4gb modules

GPU is good but if you want a beast 2 x 590 under water with full blocks.

Id go with 2 x 60gb ocz agility 3 in raid 0 (blindingly fast now they have sorted the bsods).

Blu ray writer drive instead of a reader

card reader? Hate these things, most upper speced monitors have them built in. Out of interest what monitor are you going to buy?

CPU cooler. Scrap that choice, custom build or sack cooling for a silver arrow.

PSU is good but only if your having more gear than what youve listed. 3 x gpus, customer loop etc would be crack on.

tim is up to you everyone has there own opinion here.

You have not mentioned what fans to put in the build. Hope your not thinking about stock lol

Are you going to use a fan controller? I would

What about storage? Going to need a big old drive in there somewhere

We can't 'beat' it, but there are other sensible options.

If I had 2 grand, something like this maybe. SLI 580, 2600K, 120GB SSD... That sort of things.

YOUR BASKET
2 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 580 OC Special Edition 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £371.99
1 x Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor £254.99
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive £175.99

I would have preferred a FT20 case, or even a RV02W-RW (or something), but they are out of stock. Maybe a 650D or 800D...

apart from the earlier rust comment whch did make me giggle, i think right now i would much prefer a sword made of solid gold rather than just a sharp one. it woud sell for a lot more :D

Planning on using the smaller SSD for OS etc and the 2nd SSD for the FS software. Any good? Would consider the 2600k but didn't think FS will use HT and went for a lower spec GPU as FS is mainly CPU dependant...
Cheers

Go for a SuperFlower PSU - best in the business and unbelievable value. Corsair, whilst good, you pay a huge premium for the brand name. Also, as others have said, 1200W will be neither efficient nor needed. Go for 700-850W.

Also, if it took you 2 years to save for that, I think you're not really getting much value with your graphics card or particularly mobo. A couple of 6950s would do you fine ... 590 performance is generally inferior to 6990 whilst being a lot hotter and no cheaper, with poorer drivers. 7xxx will be around by the end of Q3 or early Q4. Unless you're going after a gigantic overclock, the top of the line Intel Asus mobos are really far too pricey. A mid-range one is likely to be more than good enough.
