Can anyone beat my spec? I saved for nearly 2 years

Go for a SuperFlower PSU - best in the business and unbelievable value. Corsair, whilst good, you pay a huge premium for the brand name. Also, as others have said, 1200W will be neither efficient nor needed. Go for 700-850W.

Also, if it took you 2 years to save for that, I think you're not really getting much value with your graphics card or particularly mobo. A couple of 6950s would do you fine ... 590 performance is generally inferior to 6990 whilst being a lot hotter and no cheaper, with poorer drivers. 7xxx will be around by the end of Q3 or early Q4. Unless you're going after a gigantic overclock, the top of the line Intel Asus mobos are really far too pricey. A mid-range one is likely to be more than good enough.

SuperFlower? Seriously!?

In my opinion the best power supplies on the market are Enermax without question, but Corsair are good with longer warranties. I agree that 1200W is overkill, you could easily get away with 850W.

The 590 actually produces less heat than the 6990, it has a lower TDP, temps are not really a good indication of how much heat a card puts out, just how good the cooler is at dissipating the heat from the GPUs to the air. As for performance, the cards are neck and neck in most reviews I've read, it all comes down to if the game is nVidia or AMD specific.

A single powerful GPU card like a GTX580 would be a better buy for him than a 6990 or GTX590 however. In this case it is complete overkill for flight sims, as would two modded 6950s. SLi and Crossfire always have their issues.

As Speed said, 590 and 6990 figures are near enough identical, depending on which benchmark or game you choose to look at.

590 a lot hotter? That's simply not true.

You're right about it not being cheaper though.

Poorer drivers? What does this mean?

above looks good but id replace the ssd with 2 x ocz agility 3's in raid. That config would destroy the listed ssd

Does it needs to? I'm staying away from OCZ. I'm all for performance, but not at the expense of reliability and stability.

Oh, and I would replace memory with Vengeance low profile :) Even 580 SLI is overkill for single display. I would probably just go along with a single 580 for a while, get a flash case, and get a 580 later. I wouldn't chance a 590 unless I was hoping triple 3D display and that kind of things.

No risk with a gtx590. Seriously getting old now lol.

Its expensive, 2 x 580s are faster other than that there isnt an issue with buying a 590 and id recommend them to anyone who can afford one.

Agility 3s again are for the most part ok now. Im using 2 which had issues early one with the firmware. Upgraded to latest firmware without a hint of a bsod.

Its astonishing that 4 years after the game's release, people still "need" to spend this much on a system for Flight Sim X.

There is no avoiding the fact that the game is based on a very inefficient (and old) engine and that the frame rate gains can really start to diminish beyond 25fps in densely populated areas. However it is for reasons such as these that I personally feel that people can spend considerably less and still achieve adequate performance.

I'm of the opinion that a GTX 590 is not necessary for this game; a single GTX 580 paired with as fast a processor as possible would do the trick. I'd go a step further and say that (resolution dependent) a GTX 580 may not be noticeably faster than a 570 in this game. Interestingly, some of the individuals who claim the higher frame rates in FSX don't have the world's most expensive machines; they spend many hours trying different game texture files (from third party developers) and tweak the game's configuration data :)

i would still get 580 or two in that case...

Get only a single GTX580 or 570, remember FSX doesn't use SLI. A GTX 590 would be completely wasted. It'll also introduce horrendous micro-stuttering which is terrible in FSX.

As for hyperthreading, don't bother with the i7 2600K, get the i5 2500K- no proven benefit benefit with FSX. FSX loves high clock rate, I get much better performance with an i7 [email protected] (HT disabled) when compared to 4GHz with HT.

RAM - doesn't really matter but FSX is a 32bit programme meaning that anything over 4GB isn't used.

As Mul said, its ALL about tweaking config files. I've spent many months trying to perfect it and from the vanilla settings my performance is considerably better now. Much smoother flight with plenty of add ons.

Given that it has taken you so long to save up for this, don't waste your money! A single GTX 570/580 is plenty and the i5 2500K will be the same as the i7 2600K.

I really suggest you read around a lot more about FSX and how to get value for money with hardware, sounds to me as if your throwing a lot of hard earned money at the problem and hoping it'll work.

+1 for the recommendations above for the Silver Arrow cooler.

Also consider getting a large SSD (to two) dedicated for FSX. I'd much rather have these than the i7 2600K or the 580/590 etc.

im really not sure if you are asking for recommendations on any changes because you will be ordering it soon, or if you are looking to see if yours is the best rig on overclockers.

i can tell you its no where near the best rig on overclockers. i'm happy to be proved wrong, but that honour goes to coolmeister:

build log of SR2 stacker

if its 'what would i do with £2000 on an FSX PC, then something like this:
(single graphics card because of what shadow boxer said)

spend the rest on hookers and drugs :p

Well done on saving that money. Some great advice on what to spend that money on from members here. Take your time and spend wisely.

If it took you two years to save for that rig, you're not in the economic position to be spending that amount of money on a rig. You can get a cracking rig for half the price, put the rest towards something sensible.

I hate replys like this, he has the money, he saved it up, good on him not buying on credit, and then you get a snide comment like this.

You have no idea of his financial situation, he might be pulling in 200k a year but only allocated £20 a week for computer components becuase his money is going else where.

For a fact I enjoy allocating a tiny amounts of money a week towards this kind of thing, I saved £8 a week looking at deals of things I might like, putting it off to buy a better item and within a year I just hit the buy button on a £360 upgrade to 2500k and a Z68 extreme and 4gig of RAM. Becuase it took me so long to save up that money am I in a financial situation where I should have not bought that...... hell no, its just computing is not the be all and end all of my life.

I can understand both points of view.

On the one hand, if it takes two years to save up this sort of budget (£1.5-2k) then it does seem unlikely that he has anything more than a very modest disposable income, or should I say, disposable that isn't being spent on anything else :). The worry would be that if circumstances changed financially he may not be able to sustain his current lifestyle and thus the money that could be saved by buying a more modest rig would come in handy.

On the flipside, as mentioned we don't know for certain what the situation is, it could be that he's just paid off his mortgage and will be rolling in wonga moving forwards. It could be that it took 2 years because he's been ploughing £1k/month into investments or whatever.

As a rule I like to answer the questions posed by OPs and not secondguess their rationale, although that's not to say we shouldn't point out cheaper alternatives.

Exactly his financial situation is nobodys business but his own, if he wanted financial advice he would be on a money saving website.

Its the same non-response that I get when asking if you can use a 360 controller (one of my hands does not work properly) to play certain PC games, I have to fight the barrage of "keyboard and mouse ***" and "you suck go back to consoles retard" comments before I get a proper answer.

I get where ur coming from Kel - OP is free to ignore me, but I think it would be irresponsible not to point out that a cracking rig could be had for considerably less cash.

I too use the 360 controller for gaming (all my life on a console this is my first gaming PC) although I'm trying to 'train' myself to use KB&M through not using it on BC2 :)
