Bit of background, reversing out of a space very slowly, someone else started reversing at me a bit unexpectedly (I think they were trying to get my space) and it felt like we'd tapped each other..

Really wasn't at all sure though, I looked for the reaction of the other person.. nothing from there and I thought well even if we have there's not going to be any damage and certainly no cause for insurance so off I went.

Turns out we swapped some paint, it really is amazing how apocalyptic a probably 2mph incident can be lol...

Anyway this is the damage (and a lot of dirt.. when I wiped it down the bits left are literally just the fully black parts)...

I've been quoted £200 to have this polished out by chips away (along with a couple of other small blemishes), there's no scratch or dent it's literally just paint.. Could I do this myself? Or am I going to end up having to buy cloths and creams and whatnot that'll get me a chunk of the way to £200?

The money isn't the end of the world it's just painful spending money on basically nothing. It's a 136k BMW 123d that I'm just nursing along for as long as possible as the car isn't my financial priority right now, I just don't want it to look rubbish!

Go to halfords, get a touch up pot made to your cars color, put it on nice and thin for a few layers until it looks flush with the other paintwork, then get a mild cutting compound (g3 scratch remover and g3 paint renovator) and go over the whole area by hand and eye.

So I'm painting it too? Like I said there's no scratch, it was a ford I had a coming together with and as I found out to my cost with my STs they paint them with butter.

Well just try some compound and see how it looks and if it is acceptable to you.

Problem is the lacquer is gone?

Well if the black marks is just the other guys paint and it hasnt taken any of yours off, just take it off with a credit card.

Paint mixture, some 1000 grit sand paper, soapy water, microfiber cloth, polish and wax. The car will be good as new. In your case i'd buy a can of spray for £15 it would be easier.

I received some damage like that on a hire car once. I was nowhere near any car shops, and though it wasn't my fault I knew they would hammer me for the excess as there was no 3rd party to own up to causing the damage.

I bought a bottle of Cif and a dishcloth and got it 90% repaired in under 10 minutes. They never mentioned a thing.

Careful mate! My dad scraped a hire car and repaired it himself, he was referred to as scum by some on here!:p

Wouldn't even be considering touch up paint etc at this point.

Properly wash the car, then try and remove with a light cutting compound, e.g. T-Cut or even a polish such as Autoglym SRP.

g3 products from halfrouds are fine! I used their scratch remover recently and that really brought up the paint to life.
