Can money buy happiness?

Instead of making people happier it often makes them less happy, because they focus their energies in gaining fulfillment from material goods and not looking for the truly worthwhile things in life - love, friendship etc.

Thing is though, it depends who the person is.

If it's some 2nd rate pop star with an IQ of 60 then that is true, but if it is some clever person then chances are they will use the money to do something useful/productive.

Depends on the person. You could give me £50,000,000,000,000 and I'd still be a miserable *******. I have NEVER been truly happy with my life, all 52 years of it. Never will be.

Even though I've been married for 28 years with 2 kids, no social problems as such, no money issues, no depression etc but still somehow I am very rarely in a happy mood. I view life as a process, not an experience.

So no, even though I wouldn't turn it down, money would not make me happy.

I looked into this as part of my dissertation last year and the answer was a resounding no. Instead of making people happier it often makes them less happy, because they focus their energies in gaining fulfillment from material goods and not looking for the truly worthwhile things in life - love, friendship etc

Seems like you had a major endogeneity problem in your research too.

I don't know if money could make my happier but I'd sure as hell like to find out if anyone has a spare 20million or so!

Seriously though take my life right now and add 20 million and I'd be happier as I would have more times for the things that make me happy Ilife and love) and less need of the things that get me down (7.5 hours a day of a job that to be frank sucks)

No, but it makes it a hell of a lot easier.

That.

I know a few people who are exceptionally well off, and miserable, but I also know a couple of people who have nothing but couldn't be happier.

Happiness is a state of mind, getting there is the hard part, money doesn't make it any easier to achieve.

It cant buy happiness as such. No one thing will ever give you ultimate happiness.

However, by having such a large amount of resources so many obstacles and pointless things in life would be removed. You wouldnt have to get a crappy job, owe people money, decline going places.

With a large amount of money at your disposal you would become completly free in the world. Do, go, buy whatever you want without having to waste time getting the resources required to access said whatever. You could still goto all the small pubs you goto now, or you could take all your mates for an epic holiday somewhere.

Learning, travelling, interacting and experiencing everything you want would be a lot easier. Also, getting away from things you dont want would also be easier.

So, unless you continually made bad choices or forced yourself to do things you didnt want to do, you would deffo be happy with money. But its not the money thats making you happy, its the freedom.

Money doesn't buy happiness it removes many of the barriers too happiness.

Quoted for the truth.

If you are naturally a miserable arse, all the money in the world wouldn't buy you happiness. If you have mates, a decent idea of what you want to achieve, places to visit and a plan for your life, then as Fox says, you can remove the barriers such as lack of funds o pay for your traveling etc.

Money is a bit like lubrication. You only need a little to ease the pain, too much is unnecessary :p

If someone thinks that you can only enjoy life being rich then they have serious issues.
