While focusing on next years car may not always work, the flip side of it, i.e. not focusing on next years car because you keep all resources on this years car (usualy because your in a title fight) can have a big negative effect. Just look at McLaren and Ferrari in 2009. Pushing the development of the 2008 car right to the end of the year because they were in the title fight seriously hindered their 2009 designs.
So while focusing on 2014 may not mean McLaren produce a stormer, keeping focus on the 2013 car could mean they miss the boat and produce another stinker.
And as for DRS, I don't understand why the detection and activation line aren't the same?
