Canon 24-70 2.8 mkII reviewed by DRev

Did you get a dodgy sample? The only issue I found was the noisy AF but other than that it was sharper than my then 50mm 1.8 at f2.8 and f4, it got seriously close to subjects and resolved serious detail, even though it had no USM class AF motors or IF it did focus fast.

It was also cheap!

I've had two now, and they've been the same. Maybe the Tamron gods hate me! It is decently sharp in the centre, I just don't find the colours or contrast very good. My old Canon 24-70 I would hardly have to do much PP, the Tamron I have to tweak every shot.

Would love to go there one day but my Japanese is limited to choice words and phrases from various anime/manga!

Granted I still had the 350D and 40D back then and my processing experience was still new but I do recall wowing at the IQ of my sample!

^^^ Hong Kong speaks Cantonese/Mandarin and even English !

You could get by with just English, easily.

I think Kai possibly only speaks English or only knows a little of one of the dialects. He never seems to be able to converse with anyone who doesn't speak English in the videos, they always seem to use Alamby when they need a translation. I'd love to know what his story is though, he seems quite cagey about revealing anything, but did once confirm that he isn't related to anybody who owns and runs Digital Rev. Obviously their YouTube channel is a huge part of what makes them successful, so perhaps they just wanted somebody who was not from Hong Kong to front it.

I've spent less than a week in Hong Kong and as you say, you can get by with English fine because most people I encountered speak it. I also know people who work out there who don't speak a word of anything other than English and they do just fine. I think Hong Kong likes it autonomous post-colonial nature, so I doubt that will change anytime soon.

The one thing Kai does mention sometimes when they are walking about is how Hong Kong smells... that was certainly something I remember in many parts of the city.

It's a better lens on a crop as it's the centre performance that is really outstanding, I use one on my 5D mkii and I'm very happy with the performance for the price I paid would rather a 24-70L but didn't have the extra £500!

He probably born and grew up in England judging from this accent and his choice of slang, you don't get taught that at school. He probably knows a little Cantonese from his parents. If his parents never spoke to him in Cantonese much growing up then it would explain why his Cantonese is rusty. He would be speaking English outside his house and only convey household conversation in Cantonese.

Anyway, the fact that his English is that good gives them a much bigger exposure than someone who is hard to understand.

Yeah I figured that was why myself. I've just always wondered what his story is that led him to becoming employed by DigitalRev and anchor for their YouTube presence.

I still think its funny when you see the YouTube comments (mostly from Americans) who are baffled by the fact that he has a typical British accent but looks Chinese!

Alamby and Lock has the level of English that I expect from someone who went to Uni in HK. Lock's English is obviously more rusty. My cousin has the same ish accent as Alamby, some sentences even sounds American due to the influence on television and a lot of their tutors are American origin.

I thought Alamby was Australian... infact I believe its actually a name of Australian origin.

Her accent certainly sounds Aussie and I seem to recall that when DRTV had a break, she went to Australia as I remember seeing something about it in my twitter/instagram feed.

To be fair I wouldn't have bought a 5D mkiii from them if it wasn't for their YouTube channel, so whatever they are doing, they are doing it right.

Friend of mine who is quite a well respected photographer in his own right just got his mkii and says it is so sharp he is considering ditching his primes!

Just wondering as I've noticed you all talking about this lens and watched the review etc... Surely there is no way its worth the money ? or am I missing something. Isn't there a 3rd party sigma or something that's just as good at half the price ?

There's the HSM Sigma which is nearly as good as the Canon mkI, there's also the really cheap Tamron 28-75 but that's not as good as the mkI. There's also now the Tamron 24-70 with VC, but there's mixed feedback on that so far...
