Canon 40D Info

18-55 with IS? You cant make a lens with poor sharpness and high CA suddenly much better just by adding IS.....lol!

It'll have to because I cant work out what it would be and why there is no details on it.

I doubt it is this, but would they be adding a live picture feed through the screen like smaller point and shoot cameras?

Hope not

Why hope note ??

If they are introducing the Live View similar to the EOS 1D MKIII then indeed this live view will allow you to compose shots and check for focus via the LCD screen. Whether you use it or not is up to you, but it's a nice feature i reckon.

but who would use liveview? you don't upgrade to slr and then use it like a compact. and 3 inch lcd isn't big enough to see if it's in focus anyway, you can't beat the viewfinder.

I agree the viewfinder is better but there have been times for me where it isn't possible to use. Trying to take photos of cockpits for example. Liveview would save me taking 20 to 30 shots to get the single shot I want.

I would use it a lot. You can not beat the viewfinder no but there are so many times I just can not get into a position that allows me to compose and focus.

Liveview is MF only so people wont be using them like they use compacts. They will use this feature as an assist much like you would mirror lock up.

I would use it during studio shots. I love a 35mm viewfinder but cropped SLRs are anoying to use as the frame is to small. People should look through a film SLR viewfinder and will instantly feel disapointed with most digitals.

right, i've changed my mind, i'm getting the 40D instead of the 30D now, i've budgeted £700 so far, i can stretch another £100 or so :D

This looks cool. Just a pity I'm not experienced enough in photography to justify a 30D let alone a 40D. Or rich enough. :p

So how long will the 40Ds be around for then? 3-4 years?

They have about a 2 year sprint of being consumer products before they run into upgrades.

With all markets the choice is always hot for both the current and previous models.

In 4 years we'll see a 50D at least, but it'll still be good, just like the 20D is as capable camera now as it when it came out. Good photos will still be good photos.

The spec pretty is much as expected - no ISO 6400 though :( :(
An incremental upgrade from the 20D/30D but a worthwhile upgrade from a xxxD or 10D.

If you really need ISO 6400 shouldn't you be considering either a 1 or 5 series camera?

It was more of a general comment - Digic 3 supports ISO 6400 so why strip it out of the 40D.
Until the focus issues are sorted on the 1D3 and I see the specs and price of the 5D2 in Feb then I'll stick with my trusty 20D's.

Looks like a major high street photography store is taking pre-orders for the 40D body for £899. Makes me feel a bit better about getting a 30D and lens for £300 less than that, I certainly couldn't afford to get the 40D, phew! :)
