Canon 7D, 18-85 f3.5-5.6 IS USM, 18-135 f3.5-5.6 IS USM infos

Back home now. Battery on charge.

Initial thoughts....

Heavier than xxD cameras.
Spring loaded battery and CF flap.
Positive feel to the dials and switches, especially the dial to select mode.
The plastic coating has a rough texture to it, not sure if I like it more than the usual smooth one or not.
Usual menu system as seen on the 40/50D.
I like the lock on the function / exposure dial.
The screen is a big improvement over the 40D (not used a 50D) but the auto brightness is a bit hit and miss.

Get using it in the loop, need to see how it does tracking the aircraft.
Tue would be good, few of us out on Corris corner, :) Dress up warmly;)

Battery charged, just had a quick play and the viewfinder is very impressive. 1:1 and 100% view is a good start but the LCD overlay is the real star for me.

Past cameras I've purchased the replacement focus screen with the grid lines but I can now turn on and off the grid lines as needed!

Locked focus point come up in black squares now rather than the red. Much easier on the eye.

Shooting single static shots the 19 cross type AF points work well, especially in the vertical.

ISO performance is good. I was worried that the 18MP would be too much for the crop sensor but the testing I've done so far has shown good performance up to 800, acceptable at 1600.

Indeed, low level is the perfect work out for the AF.

Tuesday is tempting, but I don't fancy Corris, two climbs in one day makes me cry! :D

Quick question - when you're in AI Servo with just a single (centre say) focus point selected does it show the focus square permanently in the viewfinder in the same way as the 1D MkII? I find it makes panning easier than on the likes of the 30D where the point isn't illuminated.

Yes, it does.

Hmmm, that's worrying. I'm running out of reasons (other than money) not to get one :(

Still early days yet and I won't be able to recommend the 7D until I've been out a few times and used it in anger but it's looking good.

Only had two things that I miss from the 1D so far....

1. The 1D size. It so much nicer to use especially with large heavy telephoto lenses.
2. The 1D delete function that doesn't close after confirming a file delete; allowing you to confirm the delete of multiple files and even scroll throw picking the files to delete with the minimum of button presses.

Been having a play with the 7D today as my dad picked one up today with the 18-135mm lens. Must say it seems to be a very nice piece of kit.

Wish I could afford something like that :(
