Anyone looking at getting one of these?

My 40D is dying on me and I'm looking for a replacement and just noticed this one but not sure if it suits my needs. Also I'm wary of buying brand new because I got a 50D when it was released and have never really liked it.

Is it more of a portrait camera like the 5D seemed to be rather than an action one?

It is definitely a sports/wildlife cam. The new 19 point autofocus system, 8fps continous shooting and 18mp APS-C sensor all lend themselves to moving subjects at a distance rather than portraits.

Thanks for the link to the other thread, I didn't search because I didn't think you could search with two characters, please merge this thread to the other if it helps.

Is there a release date for it? It looks pretty decent from what I can see and will be a better option for me than a 1D mk111 which looks a bit long in the tooth now.

It's £1440 on one of those HK sites, which seems a good price considering the other thread had them suggesting two grand.

This, which is a right pain in the backside as I was hoping it would fit my needs (opposite to sports/wildlife) seeing as it's a fair bit cheaper than a 5DmkII. Oh well will have to continue to save for that 5D. :p

I need to upgrade my 400d this year and have been debating which to get, the 7D or 5D mkII. TBH I'm not sure of the benefits of the 5D apart from a slightly better performance at higher isos which I don't use anyway. Full frame is the other difference but I don't know any of the benefits of it over a crop body apart from the multiplier difference... more research is needed!

The larger sensor also normally gives better image quality for things like dynamic range and microcontrast.

There are several advantage of a Full-frame sensor:
much easier to get low distortion wide-angle lenses, even the 24-70 starts nice and wide, and the Nikon 14-24mm is sublime and reason enough to own a Nikon FX camera.
Shallow DoF, for portrait work you can throw the backgrounds out of focus much easier (this due to larger sensor meaning wider FOV and so to get the same subject magnification you either have to be closer or have a larger focal length.
The low pixel density of the 12MP Nikon's means that the defects in softer lenses become less apparent. Low pixel densities are a lot less demanding on lenses.
The larger sensor means diffraction limitation comes at much smaller apertures (larger f-numbers). While a 12Mp crop sensor might be limited to around F/11 before diffraction robes detail, a 12MP FX sensor will not dt diffraction problems before f/16 etc.

I think I am going to go 40D -> 5D mkII (and keep the 40D as a general workhorse)

7D spec does look great though, it is tempting

the 7d is not for me, my pennies are sitting tight in the bank for a 5DII. hopefully by year end!

was is the well known retail photography store today, forgot to ask them when its released but asked about the prices(tho according to their website stock is due on the 28th of september). body only is £1700, kit lens 1(18-135) is £2100 and kit lens 2(15-85) is £2400. also with the pre-order you get a 16gb sandisk extreme iii cf card, extra battery and 32x24 canvas print voucher, the extras are apperently worth £233.

I currently have a 300d(had since july 2004) for which I recently(in june) got a battery grip, tempted by this but think I'll wait it out for now(have been tempted by the 40d but never got it).
