Can't sleep, and have given up. What do you do when you can't sleep?

Get up, get dressed and do something, go for a walk, make a list of the things on your mind, then list down what you need to do to resolve them

I'm guessing this is no longer an issue for the OP but I usually find a cup of warm milk/ Hot chocolate, A good book, a smoke and a small scotch sends me off to sleep nicely!

Edit: Forgot this was in GD disregard my good advice and...

'ave a ****!

Had similar issues with getting to sleep after starting my current job about a year ago.

Realised it was just a higher average intake of coffee. I now restrict myself to a maximum of 2 coffees a day (outside of late shifts due to ongoing projects).

Seems to work

If I can't fall asleep, lying flat on my back with legs straight and arms to the side normally does the trick and sends me into slumber. Probably won't work for most but it works for me!

watch a film.

Exactly!

An adult film combined with....

So I just booked today off and slept from 7AM until 5PM.

Big mistake.

Now the same thing might happen again. :p

If I can't sleep I always get out of bed and do a chore like the washing up or sorting out dirty washing. It must relax me a little because I usually fall asleep when I get back in bed.

Fail.

Try relaxation techniques next time you can't sleep. Count your breathing, in and out etc. Look it up, it works! :)

If that doesn't help, as most people have said, get out of bed and do something else, it'll help take your mind off trying to sleep.
