Can't sleep, and have given up. What do you do when you can't sleep?

doesn't always work but when I try to sleep, I disengage my control in my mind and just let my imagination flow and just experience whatever my mind wants

Thanks Freefaller. I'll give some of those things a go.

I don't help myself. I eat late in the evening, I go straight from sitting at the PC, to laying in bed, I check my phone a few times while I'm laying there, and when I am trying to sleep, my thoughts are disorganised and jumbled, I end up thinking about things and bounce between being excited or depressed, and anything in-between, and I constantly stress about the fact that I'm not sleeping, and that time is ticking.

I also don't excercise in the evening... The bedroom is also typically partially lit by my PC's internal lighting, but the constant hum of the PC being on is one of the things which does help me sleep. I can't sleep at all if it is silent, I am so used to hearing my PC in the background, that something seems wrong if it is off.

I have many things to fix. :p

Noise isn't a problem your subconscious learns to switch that off. Hence why you wake when you hear glass shatter or something odd, but a train or plane flying past doesn't do anything. However, yes it sounds like you're not helping yourself.

I browse Twitter on my mobile in bed, then go and make a cup of tea, then more Twitter, and then will hopefully feel more relaxed and go back to sleep.

I'd be kept awake by the blinding guilt of having made a cup of tea and not drunk it :(

LOL, no I do drink it too. TBH browsing Twitter probably isn't what the experts would recommend, but I love it and it's productive, so it stops me stressing about getting back to sleep. After a while I seem to hit sleepy mode again so then I put the mobile down.

Rgds

If I drink anything with caffeine in it before getting into bed, I am not going to sleep... :p

My wife was in hospital this week and I ended up not being able to sleep.. I wlays end up watching a box set of some type.

I hope she is OK / gets well soon etc. <3

Watching videos of any kind just stimulates my brain and makes it even harder for me to sleep personally.
