Car Hit by Drunk Driver

When I was signing the paperwork for the Toureg the price for the week they initially signed up for was £1285 pending info from the garage. No doubt now the hire will be for 5 weeks the price will come down a bit or perhaps because it’s being paid for by her insurance company they will charge as much as they can.

Crikey!

Thought I would update the post as I finally got my car back last week. Took 11 weeks at a cost of £16360. On top of that I had the VW Toerag for the 11 weeks, baring in mind the first week charge was £1285 (they didn't know how long I would have it for so only wrote up agreement for a week initially) the total cost to her insurance is pretty sizeable (depending on any discount for having the rental car for 11 weeks).

The car is great, it drives straight and the garage has done a really good job. I'm glad to have it back as I pretty much hated everything about the Toerag.

nice to see a happy ending. she looks well.

don't imagine the other driver will need to be worrying about car insurance for quite some time. any word on charges or the like against her (apologies if it's already been mentioned in the thread)

I have no idea to be honest as the police won’t tell me anything. I wanted to get her name and address to give to my insurance company but as I was a victim of a crime they said they wouldn’t give me any information and my insurance would have to get the report off them.

I know she was a Ukrainian as we were talking to her after the accident, and after speaking to my insurance company recently about whether they would have any issues recovering the full cost, they said her insurance have had trouble getting in contact with her via mail and phone. I suspect she is either ignoring all contact or she has legged it home.

It might sound all fun and games getting a freebie hire car with in inflated price, but the only people who are laughing are the insurance co's and hire companies. We all pay for it in the end through our ever increasing premiums.

What was so bad about it? I've been considering one, though didn't really click with it, as my choices for a vehicle with a 3L V6 are somewhat limited but can't say from my limited experience that I hated it.

It wasn’t fun and games at all as I said I didn’t like the thing and I would have preferred my car not being hit in the first place.

It’s a big old bus so it isn’t my kind of thing to begin with. The engine was smooth for a diesel (I’ve had a few 6 cylinder diesels so I don’t have a problem with them) but it was mated with a terrible gearbox or at least the software was terrible. The lag between throttle inputs and something happening was bordering on the ridiculous, if you planted your foot into the carpet it felt like there was a 2 to 3 second lag before it kicked down and shot off down the road.

It had a really annoying feature when you would get a vibration through the accelerator pedal and a symbol flash up on the dash. I never investigated what it meant as I didn’t expect to have it very long but it was damn annoying. The removal of AC /fan controls nested within menus in the infotainment system is really annoying. It was a pretty well specced vehicle with almost everything on it but had manual seats which I couldn’t for the life of me setup so I was actually comfortable and the fuel consumption was pretty poor.

ah well least your sorted and the insurance side of things aren't your problem. health to drive and all athat. :)

Yeah the AC controls annoyed me - I like having easy to adjust physical buttons.

I can't remember which does which but there are various collision avoidance and speed alerts that vibrate controls - usually with the speed one you get a chime though maybe depends on software version.

Ouch, so potentially close to £30k for the repair + hire car? Surprised they didn't end up writing it off!

After the car was assessed, the garage gave an estimate of £14k and 5 weeks to fix so I presume the insurance company thought at that point it was reasonable to proceed. I don’t think even the garage thought it would take 11 weeks, as they had a nightmare getting the parts apparently. They replaced most of the front axle which I guess aren’t standard parts sitting on the shelf?

Nice, glad she's sorted! The wheels and tyres probably made up £2K of that at least. And then a lot of paintwork, and all the unseen damage to suspension and steering components, not surprised it cost what it did really!
