i never said that it was great but its cheap to insure and run for a while and why is it dangerous to do 65mph?

Specify something suitable for the task please.

Perhaps a diesel 306 for a grand? You'll save on running costs, they are quite well spec'd and won't be awful on the motorway.

a Polo GTi would be fine for motorway journeys and so would a Lupo GTi.

Can I second a Seat Toledo. A 1.9 TDi can be had for between 2-3k. VW engine and VW chassis but without the price tag.

no the V5 (VR5) is better lol 150 or 170bhp lol but they are good cars. just a passat really

The Toledo uses the VAG Group A platform. It would be sharing a platform with a Golf. Yet again you prove you are totally CLUELESS.

couldnt find a lupo GTi but i know someone who is selling 1 for 3500.

Depends what you mean by 'better'. It's quicker, but nowhere near as economical as the TDi, which is the OP's primary concern.

Well that's not £3000 is it? It's more. The cheapest Lupo GTI on pistonheads is £3500, the bottom end of the market is full of crap. The Lupo GTI is ludicrously overpriced. Those Polos look tatty.

Do not buy a yaris for that kind of motorway mileage, I drove one around Ireland. That was only about an hours drive to the hospital and back over 3 days and that was horrible enough. Underpowered hairdryers, no offence meant.

I would be looking at Focus, Mondeos and even the Golf if you like them. Though you will get more for your money with the Fords.
