No it's not.

You just chose TDCI and got caught out because you know nothing. If you don't 'believe' in it you would have said TDDI.

What did I say? You should be ripped into for not knowing what you are talking about. You can also can common rail and non common rail VAG TDI units. You just keep taking stupid wild stabs in the dark rather than thinking.

So far you've spec'd a Lupo, a Polo, a BMW, an Audi and a TDI Golf. Most of your suggestions are pretty vague and random don't you think?

Some of the people in this thread *cough* BD10NNF are hilarious.

Anyway, back to the OP - if you're looking for a mid sized hatchback, you're not really going to get much of an improvement for £1k or so on top of your Megane.

You'll find a Focus for that price but it will be tatty. Even if you did find a TDCI, which I doubt, you'll likely to run into the cost of a replacement DMF, injectors, pump etc not before long, which makes it a no-no at that age and mileage. You could find a high mileage, low powered Golf 4 / A3 but that's throwing a fair amount of money at a car that's only a marginal improvement on what you've got already, and then only really in the reliability / build quality stakes. Mk3 Mondeo would be a decent car for this sort of journey, but you don't seem to want a big car.

All in all, I think you're better off keeping the Megane Coupe. You'll benefit from the decent(ish) ride quality. Just drive it until its no longer economical to repair or you have a slightly bigger budget to play with. There's no point paying money to change cars just for the sake of it when you're not going to get much of an improvement.

why is it dangerous to do 65mph?

At 65 you're constantly overtaking lorries and slowing down other lanes/traffic in the process. At 60 (56ish mph, car speedos overestimate) you're doing lorry speed and are no more a hazard than lorries. At 70, you're going fast enough that you're not getting overtaken by everyone, even if it's a little slower than many people are going - and you won't get road-raged at by people who're (probably rightly) annoyed that you're sitting in the middle/outside lane, depending on road size, overtaking lorries while doing less than the speed limit.
