Car recommendations

well i was stating that the price of that V5 was over the top and you could get a better version for cheaper.

Been told its like a reverse ABS syste its doesnt limit the power it just cuts the power.

Traction Control isn't quite stability control...

Oh ok, I'm not too knowledgable on the actual mechanics and electronics of cars.

I thought the two different types of VAG Systems are ASR and ESP.

The ASR system includes ABS / TCS

The ESP system includes ABS / EBD / EDL / TCS

Its an interesting point because i've never heard of the older of the two systems (ASR) only working up to 30mph, also all the golf's / seats i've seen with simply ASR have a switch on the dash.

What are EBD and EDL? My Dads old S80 had ESP and all it seemed to do was stop the understeer, it felt like the front wheels breaked or one had more power than the other, with the ESP off it jus understeered crazily! In the E46 it has DSC which I can deffinately say the it turns off the traction (although I'm not sure if there are any other electronic aids still working in the background). Which system gives most control to the driver? In other words, which systems can you turn off fully?

In fairness my diesel Mondeo doesnt struggle to spin the wheels if you put your foot down in third on a damp road - its not an incredible feat!

What are EBD and EDL?

Electronic Brake Force Distribution

Electronic Differential Locking

ESP works by looking at the steering angle wheel slip and a yaw sensor in the car the determine a slip angle, once the car has reached beyond a preset slip angle the system starts the brake individual wheels to bring the car back into line.

TCS simply stops wheel slip when pulling away or when you drive along and hit some ice it will brake that wheel.

Quick TC question while we're on the subject - I don't know much about how these systems work. Does the bog standard TC you'd get on any old car that doesn't have fancy ESP etc, simply use the brakes on a particular wheel/wheels to limit wheelspin?

I see, I sort of thought ESP was all about monitoring the cars movements and adjusting the breaking force for individual wheels, but I never really knew if I was right or how it worked.

Cheers Firestar, now I know... (and knowing is half the battle) :)

Im not sure of the abbreviation of the term used but the closest i can describe it as is reverse ABS, it doesnt control traction it more 'saps' power, the system itself was quite a fail as it couldnt be turned off and on the later V5 170's (such as mine) a TCS system was used with a on/off switch

Anything over 2k for a V5 150 is a steep price to pay, theres much a more responsive and efficent engine out there than these now

OP - What do you LIKE driving? Do you enjoy your motoring, high rev's and fast corners? I suspect not as you drive a Megane Coupe which is really a "L'Oreal Landcruiser" as far as real cars go. I suspect most drivers on here have driven more cars so take their advice. A Mk3 Mondeo will handle as well as the Vidal Sassoon special and be a better place to be - it was DESIGNED to keep the rep fleet happy.

Other alternatives are things like the Accord, which is a very nice car, Mazda 6 - again, a nice car and a bit 'different' from the Mondeo image I suppose. The bigger cars do make sense for motorway miles. They are more durable because they are fleet cars, meant to much the miles. These will all achieve decent economy for you without costing the earth to fix AND being better value for money than the equivalent Focus, Golf, Mazda 3 etc size cars.

If you're not worried about economy on a 25 mile journey, spend £1500 on a BMW 740, put the other £1500 in the bank to buy another to replace it if something major goes wrong (you'd still get £750 back for a decent broken one) and enjoy sitting in your V8 sofa mooching to and from work. It increases your fuel costs by £50/month - big wow - and will change your life as you'll arrive rested to and from work, be as secure as possible due to your car weighing 2 tonnes (I sometimes dream about crashing into a Yaris and laugh REALLY at the thought of driving through it) AND if you ever go postal at work, you can fit up to 3 dead bodies in the boot at a push - useful feature...errr...so I hear....

Hi I do like driving, but I feel theres a time and a place, I dont enjoy fast driving by swerving from lane 4 to lane 2 to go round people and that sort of thing, if I'm in a national speed country road or whatever, I'll do national speed and corner and things like that.

To be honest with you though, I think your attitude, combined with the mindset of so many thinking they "need" a 4x4 to drive their kids to school etc. really disgusts me, petrol is so expensive, its only gonna get more expensive, we are running out and what with global warming etc. people should be breaking their backs to be as economically as feasibly and practically possible. If I had my way you wouldn't be allowed a 4x4 unless you could prove that it was needed for farming etc. off roading that sort of thing.

And 50 quid a month extra in fuel is a massive bump, I dont earn much and to pay that just to get to work "in comfort" is definitely not worth it, I dont mean to get on a high horse about it but so many people seem to have a "its not my problem" attitude when it comes to the environment and it really is past the point where that is a reasonable attitude.

Sorry to go off the topic and Kitchster I dont mean to have a go at you personally, I'm guilty myself of half what I'm talking about but I really think its time for some real government incentives to buy hybrids etc. and not just free tax. My mate works for a family business and the boss and his son live in the same house but both drive to work (the same place), one in a Range Rover Vogue, the other in a Discovery and then bitches and moans when he has to go pay 400 quid tax or whatever it is, good I say, the tax should be much more than that. The business is a mobile home palce and he put the Vogue through as for the business to tow mobile homes caravans etc. but my mate said its never once been used to tow anything.

Does my head in.

You know what, people switching to economic diesel or petrol cars is not a solution to global warming... Using a sustainable, non-polutive alternative to these fuels is the future, and hydrogen fueled cars appear to be a viable alternative and are already on there way in to society, so over the next 10-20 years expect them (or something similar) to fully replace the petrol engine... Until then expect me and many others to get our enjoyment out of big, powerful, environment killing, animal munching machines while we still can.

No offence intended, just trying to show you the mind-set of people like me. Although I do agree with your opinion on useless "off roaders" that aren't for off roading... but I guess people just buy them for their image.

I see - not a driving enthusiast then :p

Awesome. Thread just got interesting. Why do you feel it's acceptable to restrict peoples freedom of choice? Who are you to judge what people should and should not be able to drive? Why do you drive a 'Sport Coupe' when a diesel 106 would get you to work and save the planet?

I really think its time for some real government incentives to buy hybrids etc.

Why? Are you ignorant of the factory-to-scrapyard CO2 emissions of a Hybrid? Have you ANY idea how damaging those batteries are in both production and disposal?

Are you a communist?
