Hey,

On saturday my best friends car was stolen. He informed the police and they said they'd keep an eye out etc. Today another friend of mine saw this car being driven by 2 chavs. Followed it to a house nearby and then rang my mate whos car it was.
They both jumped in and drove the car back to my friends house where they rang the police. The police said he shouldn't have taken it back and it would be hard to get a conviction. Even though there are various cigarette packets which my mate hasn't touched, to get prints from. I'd expect it to be simple.

So, my questions are:

Would you have stolen your car back?

What the hell are the police playing at? It's his property he should be allowed to take it back.

If the police can't do anything. What else can be done?

Cheers,
Ash

But why?
It's his. The contents weren't insured. So he risked losing baout 2ks worth of CDs and other stuff. Next time he saw it could have been burnt out in a field...

With respect how silly do you have to be to keep £2000 worth of CD's in your car?

I mean thats gotta be what 200 albums? Thats insane, where does he fit them all? Has he not heard of getting an mp3 head unit?

He had come back from uni. There was about 200 CDs yeah...
He can't afford a MP3 head unit at the present time. This is a CD collection he's built up over years...
They were in a big CD case. Like one with loads of pages.

It's to do with evidence, now that he has took it back, the prosecution will have a hell of a mountain to climb to win this case if it actually get to court at all. Chances are that those Chavs will not even be arrested.

instead of calling the owner he should have called the police himself and sat there watching the house, or informed the owner who could have then let the police know.

True enough. The police have probably closed the case already - no way a prosecution would stand up in court now. If you're happy with that, so be it, otherwise you should have phoned the Police first (and waited there for them to arrive).

To be honest I may have done the same and taken the car back even if its not the 'right' thing to do.

why didn't they jjst ring the police when they was at the house ?

Because, how long were thy going to be there for?
The police round here aren't the fastest bunch.
Took them 3 days to get to my mates house after they were robbed.
He wanted HIS stuff back.

well he got his stuff back but theres no way he's going to get a conviction !

serves him right imo.

Seriously it shudn't of taken them that long if he said "hi my car was stolen a few days i've found it at a house can u come arrest the thieves please ?

But would you also want justice for those who stole it?

Meh, i dont actually own a car, can't even drive yet tbh.
If i saw it i would be worried the theives would just drive it off somewhere! So i would probably be too impatient to wait for the police as they normally aren't very fast.

I would have waited with the car or near it and not let it out of my site, called the police and waited for them. If they took a stupidly long time I would take it back.

do you think the thieves might be a tad miffed to find out they got robbed?

and do you think they'll just think, "oh, fair do's" when they see the car back where they took it from?
