Carabao Cup Final Chelsea v Liverpool ** Spoilers ** [25th February 2024]

There was uproar around here when he went, as you said he’s going to be a player, people think of it up here as the last bit of Ashley incompetence.
Tbf there wasn't really anything Newcastle could do to stop him leaving. You can't sign a pro deal until you're 17 so there's nothing stopping kids moving on if they feel the grass is greener elsewhere - you can only negotiate the best possible training fee/compensation rather than leave it to an independent tribunal to set the amount. Obvious Ashley (and Bruce) will have to take some blame for why Clark felt it was better for him to leave but you'd imagine the lure of Liverpool & Klopp, where there is a clear pathway into the first team, would be hard for many youngsters at better run clubs/academy's to turn down.

I can't believe the result, it just shows what an amazing asset and achievement Klopp and his team are.

Klopp doesn't need or want billions to buy the best players he moulds them from the ground up and this is what football should be.

I wish he would have stayed on. Not sure who I want to replace him other than Alonso at the moment.

There is a pathway, yes, but would still be harder to break into the first team than at Newcastle due to having better players in the way. Says more about his old mans opinion on the way the club was going than anything else. Hope he does well.

I don't know about the last part but I don't really accept the first bit. Yes we have better players but we also have a manager that's willing to trust youngsters and that's definitely not the case everywhere. I don't think there's many managers that are bringing on 3 (4 if you count Quansah) kids in a cup final in those circumstances and today wasn't the first time either. We've seen sides with injury problems running the same 13-14 players into the ground rather than trust in youth. I can't remember if it was Klopp or Pep Lijnders who mentioned it recently but they said something along the lines of, when they look at what they need for the first team they start by looking in the academy first. Now I'm sure most managers would say the same but how often does this really happen? Just this summer Liverpool could (and in the views of 99% of supporters should) have signed another CB and RB to cover Trent and the club would have had no issue finding £15m odd to sign some average squad player but instead have trusted 2 kids from the academy that were playing in League 1 and League 2 last season. I compare that to a time when Roy Hodgson was our manager and giving away 2 of the brightest prospects at the academy just to sign Paul Konchesky. Some managers & clubs are just too focused on short term results to properly invest in youth.
Klopp don't shake the ref's hand when the game finished today
:p
