Carbon wheelsets

So, any recommendations for 25mm tubs before I get some Vittoria Corsas? Also, do I need glue or is Tufo extreme tape sufficient?
I used Tub Tape on mine. It's pretty sticky stuff. I use a lot of adhesives at work for all sorts of stuff and tape is WAY less faff than anything else I could imagine for gluing a tyre on with. Tub Tape and Tufo tape both have strong plastic backing that you can pull out from the side of the tyre after you are happy with the position of the tyre on the rim - it's SO easy to apply and seems to be stuck on more than adequately.

They look interesting, might investigate a pair of 30's.

A lot of people rave about them but they are heavy. I am sure they are well made and proven to be more aero than some regular box rims but I wouldn't buy any wheels that were more than 1800g. I still can't see much past my Soul S3.0 which were 1550g for 23mm wide and 32mm deep alloy clinchers. I'd buy them again.

The bloke that runs Soul is really good to deal with also.

I think I am going to sell my recently acquired 50mm wheels. Just not feeling the love for them. They look and sound great but I prefer not to have to worry about getting caught in the rain and crosswinds. I prefer my Soul S3.0 32mm alloy ones. There is no doubt that the 50mm are faster on downhills and straight sections but its not enough to warrant the compromises you make with carbon clincher wheels. I have set quite a few PB on efforts that would be akin to TT'ing but TT is not really my bag so I think its best they move on to someone who will best use the gain.

I'm not sure which ones you've got but looking to get a pair of carbon clincher 50mm. If you want to email me details to my trust.

They are Farsports U shape, 23mm wide, tubeless compatible. Freehub is campagnolo which narrows my market somewhat! Ad over on Bike Radar classifieds

Well my adventure with carbon wheels is over for now. Sold them on for what I paid. I scratched an itch and will move on. For me they look great but didnt ride how they looked and have too many compromises. Glad I found out without paying £1000.

Good stuff.

I've tried an everyday wheelset and it didn't work for me either. These ones are for a very specific job so I'm hoping it will be different.

Anyhow, last question; carbon brake pads. Who uses what?

I used to use Swisssssssssstop Yellow but they don't last long. I heard Reynolds Cryo Blue Power are where it's at these days. Of course the wheels will come with a full set but I'm expecting them the be made from a mixture of butter and death.

I bought the campagnolo ones. They apparently do them in shimano fit too and a number of the pro teams use those on non-campag rims. I have nothing to compare them with so opinion is next to useless but - they stopped the bike, not as well as alloy wheels and the squealed a bit but that might have been a set up issue. The squealing was kind of annoying on the weekend sportive because everyone prob thought I was a big Jessie as they knew when I was braking. Being a big Jessie is ok but other people knowing it is not so cool!

I used and rate Reynolds. The cheap pads that came with my CT45s perform as well in the dry but I haven't tried them in the wet yet... The Reynolds were actually ok in the wet.

Right, valve extensions.

I've got Vittoria tyres and the red Vittoria extenders, but it appears that these extenders are only for tyres when the whole valve removes, not just the core.

So any recommendations for valve extenders for removable valve cores? PX have some for 99p each.

Edit; just thought of something - I may have been doing it wrong.........

Vittoria tubs all have removable valves. Unscrews at the bottom and leaves a very small thread sticking out of the tyre.

edit: found a pic.

although if you were expecting to attach the extender to the valve that came with it, you'll probably have the wrong size when you unscrew the valve like the image

The red ones are an old design.

I just used some £5 extenders from wiggle, if you buy the zipp ones be aware they have a bulge which doesn't work with all pump heads. I thread locked my extensions on as I didn't want to risk it coming loose when inflating the tyre.

Do you find the tubular fits crap where the valve stem meets the rim as there is all the extra material there?

I've heard the continentals are better in this respect, I was thinking of giving tubs one more go before going back to clinchers.

I've not tried fitting yet as my wheels have only just been shipped.

I've ordered some cheap extenders from ebay and I've read that using plumbers tape around the join helps with any leaks.

Pulled the trigger on a set of Enve Classic 65s with DT Swiss 240 hubs.

Going to see how the Vittoria CX Evos I have look when fitted before I glue them, make sure they are good around the valve. Have been stretched for a few months now so should go on easy.
