A guys bought a new car on finance from a dealer, I really don't see the hilarity of this at all. Some people like old cars some people like new its just personal choice, he's getting a new car and that makes him happy why is that so bad.

a 1.4 astra is £15k?

Just because it's a 1.4 doesn't make it bad. Most manufacturers are going for blown small capacity engines instead of 1.8 or 2.0 NA engines as they have lower on CO2 emissions and are more fuel efficient.

Mum's Mk6 Golf TSI listed at over £17500, and you can't get any Golf for under £14500 now even with a crap can't pull the skin off a custard 1.4 80bhp ish NA engine.

OK, so your mate is getting fleeced by the dealer's man maths, but the car isn't that bad. Not everyone wants a 10 year old 5-series.

1: Insane price for a crappy car.

2: Not telling him the above would be akin to ignoring someone being mugged in the street.

I just bought a 2007 Mk5 Golf TDI GT 170 with 17k miles on the clock for 14k from a main dealer. I know which deal sounds better to me.

image what you could get with all that money

Indeed, no need to imagine, you could buy a rather better 'Vauxhall' for that sort of money, http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1510704.htm :) ...it's only a few years old too, there are others with less miles at this sort of price too, actually they have gone up slightly, they were a bit cheaper a year ago, relative to what you get.

But yea, bad deal, very bad deal, I would try and talk him out of it, show him why it's bad, when it's all laid out in-front of him he might well see sense.

That’s all I needed to stop me buying a Porsche I would have been bored to tears but stuck with by now anyway. OcUK's common sense car buying advice team are great :) ...I personally have learnt a lot about buying cars from this place, and to think more critically when I am doing in rather than ooo new car, shiny! ...only £300 a month you say? ..wow.

I would never in a million years recommend a 10 year old 5 series to Mr. Average car buyer, but my 10 year old 5 series is a hell of a lot better than any Vauxhall Astra though, it's a superior car made to a totally different budget and with a totally different set of considerations but with a different buyer in mind, it's a superior product ...but it also costs a lot more.

Still a 10 year old one does not, it costs a lot less than a new Astra, however as you imply, it isn't quite that simple, it depends what you want from your car and your ownership experience, as to weather it's a good move or not. Old or new, they are different cars for different people really.

Its not a crappy car though? At least no worse than the one you just paid 14k for. How about I laugh at you for buying a 3 year old Golf with 20k miles on it for 14k and list the metal you could buy for that.

In fact how about this http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=751167 and save 1k? Your car seems like the worst deal ive ever seen in comparason.

See its easy to Judge isn't it?
