Card security at B&Q

Chip and PIN sucks, it's NOT secure at all. Shoulder surfing anyone?

Banks. Try putting pictures on cards you dolts. Ends 80% of CC fraud.

Or maybe they don't *want* that....

</conspiracy theory>

thats really not true...its not hard to cover up

and as ive said before most cards are lost rather then stolen so if i found your card i wouldnt guess the pin sure as **** could make a forged signature though.

Also just because they know the pin doesnt mean they could wipe your account - there still daily limits on ATM's and there are stil security checks on irregular transactions on your cards.

It has already cut a huge amount of fraud in the little time it has been in use with those who have had C&P enabled cards.

And although it can technically shift the liability from the retailler to yourself, most banks do pay out as long as you obviously didnt have a piece of paper titled "My pin" in your wallet - in terms of paying out fraud they are not as money grabbing as you think.

The worst systems are those self service things in tesco...no signature or pin...MADNESS!

I'm guessing you mean credit cards here? The idea of a bank closing a current account due to the spouse being authorised to use the debit card is a bit of a stretch for me.

Negative, they dont close the account - but if a card is [presented by anyone other then the card holder and the retailer call there merchant enquirer or even the issueing bank it would be blocked, i know as i do it at work. We then phone the card holder see what it was - and if they say they did give authority remind them that its illegal to do so as its there name on the card...yada yada yada

The only real problem with chip and pin is that now all a 'shoulder surfer' has to once he has your pin is to mug you and go straight to the cash machine getting out cold hard cash. No messing about buying goods in a shop, risking cameras etc. I wonder what the banks stance on that would be seeing as the correct pin was entered into the machine for a withdraw?

I dont really think chip and pin is secure either to be totally honest, it SHOULD be chip and pin + signature, that might be a bit better, and if the keypads where a bit better placed it would also help, like at the side of the till so everyone in the queue behind you cant see it. I just think the actual pad itself could have been better designed all it has to stop prying eyse is 3cm of plastic either side of the pad. Not enough imo

Anyone who doesn't cover up the keypad while entering their PIN number deserves to get their money stolen.

You've got two hands, use them both ;)

ID cards will solve all these problems!

</idiotic government>

In other news, signatures are pointless anyway as the vast majority of the time no one checks them. It would be akin to the chip and pin machine accepting any 4 digits from anyone for any card. At least with chip and pin the data you submit is checked.

Plus, as has been pointed out, the PIN is also not written on the card like a signature is.

I thought that the fraud was now passed to the retailer not the bank like it used to be. I dont think you are liable for some one robbing you afaik.

I can stand the card readers that are secured to the till. I much prefer the ones you can pick up for obvious reasons.

Especially when it's bolted down in a really awkward position.

So far only come across a handful of bolted down machines. Normally (ie shopping with the missus) we try to cause as much embarrassement as possible in these particular shops, as the missus is in a wheelchair and therefore unable to cover up her PIN entry details if it's out of reach. Very poor customer service, verging on discriminatory towards people with disabilities. Those on curly cords are fine though :D

I've not used a machine where you can't pick it up and pull it to you - normally I'm in a supermarket and the nearest person is at the other end of the till so no chance of seeing me but if I'm being crowded I'll pull the pad out of its holder and turn slightly / hold it to me.

Once this is finished and *everyone* uses their pin for purchases I hope they look towards the internet and make *everyone* use the verified by visa / mastercard secure code schemes.

I'm amazed banks have allowed fraud to go on for so long, it shows just how much money they make if thye can allow a billion a year to go walkies and shrug it off.

Retina Scan 4tw....

I hate people watching over my shoulder, but then, when I am behind somebody in a queue, I always wonder just how easy it would be to get their PIN, so I watch them put theirs in.

I guess its a case of deciding if you could beat the person behind you in a fight in the car park outside the store - if you can, then let them watch :D
