Career in the Forces? (IT Related)

although the pay is 'low' after all my food/living bills are taken out i have about £1000 to play with.

this is a very good site, on the left hand side you can see your pay scales

http://rafcom.co.uk/

The ICT trade is currently on the lower payband until CPL, HOWEVER the SAC's have just come under review to see if we are to get pushed to the higher pay band (which we should)

Cheers man, thats acctually not bad.

Whats the pay like during trainining, a bit worried about being able to afford insurance and the car payments.

Thats the way it works. Important people sit and delegate. Minions run around like mad :p
I'll have you know I am not on base anymore, I'm away doing a rather intensive course for the next 4 months, my head is beginning to hurt! Then when I have done that I'm off to the desert again :D

New entrant gets £13,013 per year. Rising to £16,227 on reaching LAC.

You'll obviously have to pay food & accom from that, but with a little working out it gives you an idea of how much cash you'll have to play with during your recruit training.

knew that but just wondering if I will have to spend a lot during intial training. Doubt I will have much time to myself so that will save a few pennies.

Just swithering or not to sell the car and going bangerenomics.

They are pretty desperate for ICT from what I gather. Im booked in friday morning to go through my application for Avionics Technitian. When I phoned up to discuss this I was asked if I would like to do ICT instead.

Im pretty good with computers and comfortable with them, however I prefer my work to be a bit more hands on. So ill be sticking to Avionics.

Been to doctors today to check my blood pressure and breathing etc and that seems fine. So Ive just gotta get myself in good shape. and hope my application goes well

If money is your drive in life, then I dont think the forces are ever going to satisfy.

Well rumour has it the pay 2000 is being looked at again now. All the ancilliary trades ;) seem to be getting bumped up to techy wage, yet the real techies aren't getting any payrise!

Do people in the ICT trade in the RAF have any sort of say in what sort of thing they would like to do? Because ICT is a very broad subject, and just like the navy it seems to be all in a single trade, unlike the signals which have it split into a few more trades it seems so people can focus more on a certain area of ICT.

i remember being in first year uni doing software development.

and we had a meeting with people who finished that course long time ago and working.

one guy came on and said dont waste your time there is not jobs in ireland software related, also he said intact he said few of my friends are working in mcdonalds.

how ever he said there is some job in japan. he himself moved to japan and worked there for 5 years.

for some reason lecturers took him of the stage and apologized but he was speaking truth tbh. there is no decent jobs as it well at least in ireland.

there is however small companys but the salary is bad. and to get in big company u need experience

Yes, walk into local AFCO.

You to RAF man/woman: "Hi, I want to join"
RAF man/woman: "ok, fill in this application form"

Hm true, would they then look at relative positions etc? Rather than just throw me in 'wherever'.

There isn't many offices near me I don't think...nearest ones are Oxford and Coventry going by the site I believe....Or Leicester.

Absolutely!

Normally they shall try to fill gaps that need filling, like quotas, but they can talk to you about any position. Personally I'd like to go to the AFCO knowing what I want to do first but hey I know a lot of guys that didn't. You're best researching on the RAF website at jobs and see if anything really interests you. Research more about that job through forums and the AFCO then make a decision.

Tip: Don't apply as chef/admin/MT/ATC/Flight Ops/steward/supply
Do apply for WSOp Crewman (selection is hard though)/Int/Regiment/Aircraft tech/weapons tech

Captain Planet since you seem to be in the know can you answer me this, is there much chance of a late entry commission in the RAF, and is it like the army where you need to be a WO (which could be 20 years in, leaving little time for advancement if you become an officer).

Why, am I to assume the former trades are well-manned or 'over-subscribed' in terms of applicants, and the latter are in great demand?

I am pondering my next step with the RAF...I went to OASC last month but didn't get in as an IntO, I failed the aptitude test :( - needed 6 more marks to reach the required standard. Fancy re-applying as an officer, since I have a degree, Flight Ops this time, but I'm also pondering the airman route as well - considering Flight Ops assistant, Weapons Tech or some engineering trade.

I'll have to look up more then...Have no idea to be perfectly honest...

And I doubt I can get anywhere 'decent' straight away as my grades are next to pap.

I'm just a bit lost at the minute as to what to do with myself career wise lately.

And sitting here isn't exactly helping me. :p
