Career in the Forces? (IT Related)

Well he said minimum was 2 months, but I'm trying not to get too excited :p

There'll be an interview the week after, then a medical, then an easy easy fitness test and finally a date for Halton followed by a final interview.

If I do everything first time and there's space at Halton (they also try to time it right so that as you graduate you go straight into a trade training date) then there's no reason why it shouldn't be 2 months.

:D:D:D:D

haha. You're more excited than me.

I need to pull my finger out with my fitness though!

Theres a 3month waiting list for AET in navy, though Ill have my sister constantly seeing if anyones dropped or anything to see if she can shift me up the queue quicker :)
No doubt she'll make the lads she knows at hms rayleigh go tough on me too ;(

Lol

Ive been toying with this idea since i was 18.. now 21... i hope time isnt against me. If i finish uni or not im going to try my best to get in the RAF, either degree or none

Ill be resitting 2nd year

badtimes.

Id prefer to go in the raf intelligence analyst, or in the air operations (air traffic control) area.

Not too sure id want to go in as Officer, like what you said really. Argh im in limbo with life :p

You sure it's worth re-sitting second year if your heart's not in it?

You could save yourself 2 years... sorry that's really **** advice but that's what I'd do if I was wanting to go into the forces but not with a commission.

If you do stay at uni and want to get a commission, then get into UAS. That or volunteer as a Civilian Instructor for a cadet unit. It'll set you apart from the competition at Cranwell.

Nice one Zefan, The thought of joining has always been on my mind. Nearly done it last year and bottled out, the thought scares me slightly. But looking onto my future on civi life and I don't think its for me.

Might have a re-consider - get fit and apply.

Good luck Zefan, let us all know how you get on.

Join the army because you want to join the army and not because you want to do IT in it. You have to want to "live the army way of life" other wise you will just simply hate it. By all means join the army but you must accept it for what it is and the way it operates - if you can do that then you will have one hell of a time.

If you want to join the forces go for it.

However when looking at ICT on a base, it is mostly helpdesk stuff you do, resetting passwords, printer jams etc. A bulk of the network and server stuff is done by an outside company.

And while you may get deployed its not at a moments notice, normally you get 4 to 6 weeks notice, as there are courses and what not you have to go on.

On the A/C side of things, they is less IT involved since most of the newer aircraft coming onto the line have support contracts with the supplier. For instance the RAF engineers use to the fix the pegasus engine on the harriers, but not we have the GR9s in service, if there is a problem with the engine it goes back to RR for repair. It is a massive shame as the military has some of the best and capable engineers going more so than the yanks :)
