Career in the Forces? (IT Related)

No its true, although you join as an ICT tech you are part of Trade Group 4 which is ICT, Comms, Electronics etc. So they would move you around in TG4.

What will happen is the ICT people will be moved into their own unit, then do a years detachment with the outsourced company then come back into the forces, and then be replaced one at a time with a civvie and at the same time moved, or PVR out and go work for the outsourcing company.

Kimbie

Not quite right with the second statement, although I see where you are coming from. Google DII (Defence Information Infrastructure) and the consortium ATLAS (led by EDS) who will deliver this. It's all in the public domain. Anyway, ATLAS are delivering DII, which in a nutshell is a common IT platform across defence which will replace most (not all) of the myriad of legacy systems in use within defence. During the migration phases, TG 4 personnel directly involved in CIS service provision will become essentially 'agency' staff. Same job, same place, still in uniform, still subject to military law but their wages will be paid by ATLAS during the transitional phase.

Once DII is fully implemented on that particular site, these personnel will be released back to the RAF for posting elsewhere, and ATLAS will take over, managing the service provision remotely and offering limited desk-side support.

The old CIS Trades (TG3 & 11) are now TG 4 recently rebranded ICT. Lots of turmoil, lots of change. Many unhappy bunnies with uncertain futures (especially ex TG 3 techies). The drive now seems to be toward Information Management roles, basically anything content driven, rather than, for want of a better word, hardware support.

TCW is now part of 90 SU (again google it) and will also get a deployed element of DII. And yes they can (and very often do) deploy at the drop of a hat, thats their role.

ICT (TG 4) as a career choice. Yes, it's an area undergoing change within an organisation which IMHO is now (at last) playing catch up in regard to IT provision and support. Give it a few years as it settles, it will be one for the future. If you have the qualifications for a commission, deffo go for it first (CE Engineer) as the financial benefits after service far outweigh what other ranks are entitled to on retirement.

You have to be able to pass the yearly medical test, but to be honest thats a joke, as if you fail it you get to retake it several times

Kimbie

I presume you mean the Fitness Test (RAFFT)? Its twice a year now. And the RAF standards have gone up significantly.
Due to 'issues' with the number of unfit (and therefore non-deployable) personnel, there is a plan in the pipeline!....

Fail your RAFFT....12 weeks remedial.....Sit RAFFT....fail?....12 more weeks remedial......RAFFT......fail?.......Discharge.

Sit up and pay attention biffs! Why should the same people constantly be deployed, 'cos you can't be bothered to sort out your fitness?!

So Zefan, you had your results back yet?

Andr3w would you mind me sending you an email just for some more information on RAF life?

I'm not sure he's the best person to talk to as he's pretty frustrated with his current posting. Actually I'm talking crap, he's probably the best person to ask for exactly this reason!

I haven't done the test yet, sitting it tomorrow!

Achieving 95% on the example tests, so I should pass easily. Still going to practice more tonight though.

Im trade group 4 and its amazing how much bullcrap the AFCO's are telling people lol :D

Good luck 2moro Zefan, I did brilliant in mine for Navy, but i hit a hurdle 5minutes before my formal interview - criminal record.. :)
couldnt sit interview and had to get all the documents relating to it, got to take them in before they can reschedule my interview now!

Cheers!

Bummer about the criminal record, all part of the process though and I'm sure time will fly. Gives you longer to prepare for the interview I guess!

It was just regarding the role you do, what does it involve.

And what is day to day life like in the RAF. Heard a few comments that its tough no time to yourself etc.

Other comments that its very simliar to a normal job, you have your pad which you have your TV games console etc and work a normal shift unless something major comes up. Which i'm sure it does.

Not that am looking for a normal job the complete oppisite, I love working and one of the reasons I want to join the RAF to work somewhere I am going to work and not be as bored as I would be in civi street.

Edit: Good luck Zefan, keep us posted.

No time to myself? Depends what job you do really, during the day its REALLY busy (my job is,a lot of people havfe nothing to do) but as soon as 5oclock goes its my own time, go to the gym/cinema, have a few beers etc.

Pretty much mate, obviously your in the military so anything could happen, but it is like a normal job, with benefits, your own room etc, but where i work, if i stand to the door leading outside an look straight ahead, i can see aircraft taking of not 100m away. Pretty impressive!

Its what you make of it -(you will hear that ALL the time) If you want to play sport, you play sport. If you want to go on an exped somewhere, go down to the gym and find out when the next exped is and put your name down! Don't be one of these that just throws themself around there room all night and complains that its crap and boring!

Edit: Good luck Zefan, keep us posted.

From what I've heard it depends greatly on the location of your posting.

As Chasser says, TCW will be very much a deployable role, ready to jet off any time to any place. You will still have your own room etc, as far as I know you'll get this wherever you go in the RAF (obviously different when on deployment!).

If you're based at Marham or Brize however you will take on more of a civilian style job where you could be at a helpdesk or in the workshop repairing/maintaining equipment.

You get your own room anywhere, or house if you are married (you obviously have to pay a monthly fee for both, but its not much)

TCW is where i will proberly go next, as im gaining some experance here of what the RAF is actually like, then going to TCW if i can to get me some medals and get some tours under my belt!

The second comment was pretty much correct, however most helpdesks have gone civi, yah!!

Thanks guys,

Was acctually looking to go in as ICT. As got a HND in it and think it would help me get in and applying for roles in IT here anyway. Also sounds intresting.

much appreciated.

Sorry to sound ignorant, but what is TCW?

Go for officer dont even think about it, just do it lol. Read into being an officer, if you have good leadership skills you and a degree, you are half way there!

TCW is tactical communications wing, there is also TSW (tactial supply wing) TIS (tactial imagery wing) etc etc, TCW bascially a 30week rotation, in theory it goes, 10weeks training, 10weeks on tour (iraq/afghan/america/somewhere else in the world/artic/working with the sneaky beaky people)etc then 10 weeks rest/training...and repeat.

If you are single, go for TCW, if not, just see how your partner would feel with you being away for 10weeks at a time.

Best of luck, get training! The fitter you are the more you will get out of it.

Now that sounds like fun!! Have a missus but I think when I join we'll finish. Couldn't stand being in that kind of relationship would rather concentrate on my career.

Don't think I would be confident enough to go in as a officer, my confidence really lacks in a group untill I get to know people.

Your confidence will improve, it has to. Today i was having to talk to the station cmder as i was fixing his computer, when i first started i would have been crapping myself, however when you get to talk to the higher ranks you realise they are pretty down to earth people and it makes you feel relaxed.

TCW is ment to be brilliant if you want to travel!

Yeah joining TCW sounds exactly what I would love to do!

My confidence is one thing I would like to improve on and have built it up over the past few years but still don't think I am confident enough just yet to be an officer.
