Carling Cup Football. Yes, Spoilers...

I count four(?) of them who've started a first XI game before, whereas nearly all of Man Utd's line-up have.

I always said that both teams had experienced players on the pitch :)

there are about three Utd players who arent that experienced plus the sub - for the record

Very good performance, fantastic save from Fabianski at the end. Vela as with every match he actually gets more than 5 minutes in and plays furthest fowards looked fantastic. Something we haven't really seen in the prem is a player who will simply shoot anywhere in any way, lobs, power, deft touch just looks like he'll be fantastic but so far in the league he's mostly been getting 10 minutes in desparate games and out of position.

Simpson looked a lot more confident and simply better than he's managed before. Wilshire and Ramsey were both superb, again, showed a very good ability to keep the ball, not waste it, and win it back off bigger players. Frankly both seem to be involved a lot more from start to finish, strong throughout and very creative, I think both seem like they could be better than Theo, which is another reason to push THeo upfront where he'll be more effective, and play real wingers on the wing who have more fight/strength in them.

I don't see why Vela, Wilshire and Ramsey aren't getting a little more than token appearances at the moment. Was a shame that Bischoff really didn't get much of the ball and came on late, I've not seen much of him yet.

Merida is also starting to be a little more effective, some superb play and much more involved than previous games I've seen him in.

Also no, I don't think Wengers idea of our first team squad could have played that well or won so convincingly and been unlucky not to get more, by far our two best performances this year were Sheffield and this game, maybe something needs to be changed when the most exciting, best and strongest defensive football is played by our reserves rather than our first team.

Wenger out still though yeah? :p

Cracking game to watch I thought, so much talent and they all seem to be able to do what the current crop of England players seem to fail at miserably, mainly actually have a decent touch, vision and the composure not to panic in possession - at this rate by 2012 we might have a pretty decent national team if it's made up of these Arsenal youth players :p

Vela is a class act as well, looking forward to see him more in Premiership :)

Great performance by the kids today, well deserved win, Wigan looked lost after the 2nd half! Fabianski was hit and miss, needs to work on collecting the ball e.t.c but looks a decent shop stopper.

Anyone else reckon the 1st team would have struggled against that Wigan side?

yes, Wenger out, he's not really in charge of the youth team besides, afaik, choosing who to buy and even then he's got scouts looking he decides. The fact is the first team can't play like that, the choice and balance of the first team isn't there, and there are clearly players in that team playing better than those in our first team and Wenger refuses to pick them.

Seems Rice, other coaches can get that kind of performance out of our reserves but Wenger can't get that out of the first team or anything even close.

i was at the emirates tonight, Vela and Wilshire were great and actually Vela looked a class above everyone else on the pitch.

first chance to see Merida in the flesh, played quite well too.

How did I know even this thread would get turned into a Wenger-bashing thread when I saw drunkenmaster's name?

On a positive note, it's good to see the rich elite of football don't always get it their way. Good on Man Utd to do the upset.

Great result, performance and game.

Wilshere was great tonight, Ramsey was even better. I can see why Man U are so upset he chose to join us, a real talent.

Vela's goal was classy, very class but he didn't have the best game overall. I don't think he's quite ready to start for us in the Premiership, certainly away from home anyway, but he's getting closer and closer.

There's actually less than half but that would be purely semantics. Against a half decent team those kids could have been murdered particularly with the way they gave the ball away at times.
Not taking anything away from them as they played well, but only Song, Vela and Djourou should be considered part of the first team squad (Fabianski too, but he doesn't count as a keeper). The rest should pop in and out of the squad.

Some of your comments on Wenger border on the ridiculous.

Are we choosing to forget the way we have taken apart some sides this season, Fenerbahce, West Ham, Porto, Bolton, and Blackburn. Or does everyone on here have memorys that are ingrained by the 15 minute rinse and repeat cycle of Skysports. So the first XI have played like that, and better, and of course worse.

Wenger was in charge of the game so he got that performance out of them, I've no idea what your comment about Pat Rice is about as he has diddle squat to do with the reserves.

Of course Wenger has scouts watching players, all managers do? However, he still has final say on EVERY player joining the club.

Listen to what Roy Keane said about Wenger. Here

You are of course entitled to your opinion, but some of the stuff you post borders on the insane. Anyone who thinks RvP > Bergkamp rarely has a valid opinon I'm afraid.

Also, to say that was a convincing defensive display is nonsense. Wigan really should have done better with some of the chances they had.
