Carling Cup Games - 20th - 21st September *spoilers*

Crikey, if we had your way Tom there would be nothing to discuss? Do you want everyone to bow down and just praise Man U's performance every game or actually talk about something?

No I'm honestly interested in where this dirty tag comes from, I know where it comes from with Baz but the way people are talking tonight Rafael has this long list of misdemeanour's to his name when in fact both his Red cards thus far in his career have come from second yellows (both in fact due to professional fouls the same kind that Skrtel made against Spurs and he certainly isn't a dirty player)

I guess it's the same scenario as it is with Cole, you've made out he's a regular dirty *******.

Like Vidic does, Rafael seems to always get caught out and has to haul the opposition down, this is why I said about him and Snodgrass prior to the game starting. He comes across as a bit of a **** on the pitch too.

No one accuses Vidic of being dirty though (they will now obviously :p)

On Rafa though the general consensus (not on here obviously) was that he was harshly dealt with on both occasions when he has been sent off. Even Arry said he was unlucky to get sent off against Spurs.

Having to resort to pulling players back is also in part just due to inexperience and getting too tight/caught out of position, seems to me far to many expect a 21 year old defender to be the finished article.

Rafael doesn't just haul players down. He has a tendancy to make rash challenges too as well as the occassional reckless challenge. IIRC, he was very fortunate not to have been given a straight red for the first of his 2 yellows against Spurs, he should have been sent off at Anfield last season and the only thing saving him from a red card in the FA Cup game against Liverpool was the fact that Meireles bottled the challenge.

edit: @tom: The only place where the general consensus would be that he was harshly sent off vs Bayern would be a Utd forum. The reaction from the Bayern players was poor (did Rafael get in trouble for waving an imaginary card vs Spurs the other year? :p) but the correct decision was made.

Watched the game on the box, didn't hear anything but the BBC match report states chanting about Istanbul. Never nice to hear any fans mocking such tragedies :(

Depends on your perspective I guess, his inexperience showed getting involved with Ribery when already on a booking (which the ref was going to let go until he was surrounded by Bayern players) but the first yellow in that game was a joke.

Was it? Didn't he cynically flick out/kick/trip the Bayern player off the ball? IIRC, it was a needless card on his part but not undeserved.

Nice goal by Owen, about time he started scoring.

Arsenal didn't deserve that, should be 2 down.

MW

 Owen has a good goal scoring record at United.

Owen is simply fantastic, his goals to game record for us is outstanding. Just wonder how many goals he might have scored if he was given more opportunities....

I admit I've wondered this at times, but can understand why others get the nod ahead of him.

according to the BBC Owen has 18 goals to 19 Starts ratio in the Carling Cup for Liverpool, Newcastle & Utd (for what its worth)

Neither of the twins are particularly dirty players from what Ive seen - and comparing either to the tricks Cole gets upto is completely laughable (even without the latters 9 Seasons of additional experience being considered)

(edit for the record , those chants and the bottle / coin throwing have no place in any stadium anywhere)

Dont know what to expect from tonights game i just hope we bounce back. If Kelly is fit id like him to start im sure Coates will due to Skrtel being suspended.

Bellamy to finally start to maybe rest Carroll or Suarez for the weekend? Who knows just want to win and advance forward give team a boost after our previous mauling by spurs.

Again what exactly did he do tonight?

Don't think I claimed he did anything last night, just saying I think he is a dirty git.

As others have said though, perhaps getting mixed up with his brother. Tend to confuse them sometimes, can't seem to pinpoint why? :p

I might also be getting him mixed up with his twin, but on the strength of last night they don't seem dissimilar with the type of challenges they put in.

I'm completely mystified about the people that think Ashley Cole is dirty. I mean, he seems a horrid bloke away from the game but there's been very few incidents on the pitch over the course of a decade...

Rafael isnt dirty per se' but he does dive in a lot. Sometimes he spends more time on his backside than he does on his feet...

The twins are competative though and rafael certainly likes to put it about a fair bit, especially given his stature..

I'm guessing he slept with Franks wife or something. He seems to really hate the guy.

Also good to see valencia being put to use in defence? Considering nani was dropped for valencia in the big games at the end of last season i have hope that fergie can now reconsider and use Nani as his main right winger with tonio resigned to the bench as a spare for Rafael.

Woohoo we won lol..still managed to concede first to Shrewsbury lol.

Good to see our youngster Oxlade Chamberlain get on the scoresheet...could be a good one for the future.

Wenger saying we dont need a new defensive coach...ermmmm quite clearly we bloody well do if we are conceding such soft goals....one good thing is that at least our first choice goalkeeping problems have been sorted by Chesney taking over the reins.
