Carrick Out?

Another morning after another defeat....

Just nothing - tumbleweed stuff.... Just bizarre....

It's like board / INEOS are just sticking two fingers up to the fans and sitting there thinking this is hilarious.

I almost feel bad for Carrick now - He's literally ruining his own managerial career - re-writing some of the worst stats / records in the clubs history with his name all over it..... As the board won't sack him.....

We'll get destroyed by Roma on Tuesday night, and then Villa are on the bounce and will run all over us at the weekend, then it will be the "ok - we've finally sacked him" routine.....

It's horrible to watch how badly the club is run from top to bottom.

Think it's probably more a case of what @shipinabottle posted above tbh re Carrick's replacement

I don't disagree at all - but it still just bizarre...... Your a dead man walking but "do me a favour and say nothing" - Wilcox has done nothing to help Carrick out here.... I can't imagine money is the aim for Carrick - his reputation should be worth more to himself than any "deal with Wilcox"

It's just sad and pathetic to see that abject failure is acceptable for the sake of "keeping quiet".....

A few million is a few million regardless of how rich you may already be and besides it’s not like he’s going to get many high-value job offers after this. He’ll be a yes man until the very end.

It does indeed look like they just decided to write off Chelsea/Roma/Villa and sort things in the break. I sort of do understand that, but it also seems very weird. I suppose, on balance, we aren't likely to win any of these games regardless of manager. I think you could have made a case for just putting Fletcher in charge though, in the hope we get a draw or two.

Villa and their fans do seem very worried about Emery, I just wonder if some discussions have been had behind the scenes... Lee Hendrie was on Sky last night saying he's really worried about Emery leaving for Man Utd. It would mean huge concessions from INEOS in terms of how things are run, but maybe Ratcliffe has seen sense?! Not likely, I know.

I really hope you beat Roma and Villa convincingly, I can't be dealing with more new manager bounce after the break when you face Liverpool.

That's my biggest fear at this point, and I think if they kept him on longer as a result of that, we really could be in relegation battle territory. A bit like Tottenham's situation last season, it could spiral.

I do think (read: hope) the decision has basically already been made and they'll announce it the Monday morning after the Villa game. I'll be surprised if it's anyone other than Howe though.

I'd say there is less clamour for the removal of the coach this weekend. People have run out of emotional energy for it.

I watched a bit of Goldbridge yesterday talking about Conte and the ridiculous position that we wouldn't want him because he is a short term option. Previously I hadn't really bought into the prospect of Conte because of that term history he has but for once I think Goldbridge has a point. This notion of building another Fergie, Pep, Klopp style dynasty is really for the birds particularly where this club is now. Appointing Conte would actually be a pretty good move. He's an absolute **** and it would likely signal the end of Wilcox and the ineptitude of the currrent Hierarchy. At the very least his terms of engagement would give him far more control and influence than "club man, mild mannered Michael". Otherwise he isn't interested. I'd love us to be building with a hipster coach like Amorim but sensibly we need a ****kicker. Someone who we know will get rid of Martinez, Maguire, Shaw, Dalot, Mount, Rashford and get in some big strong boys.

I agree, people seem to have just given up now and are waiting for the break. We're in a stasis.

Ultimately, the aim should be to appoint the best person for the job - and that's Conte. Planning for dynasties is a waste of time, as you say.

They should just appoint him, back him to the hilt, appease him, and I think he could build something here. INEOS will be afraid of him though for those very reasons. Same with Emery - though he'll cost £20m to get out of Villa, Conte won't.

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens after the Villa match. Will the fans applaud Carrick again and boo the players or will they be worried the club see it as more proof Carrick is the guy :p

Guess we can kiss goodbye to Champions league already this season, only hope is getting a Europa league now.
By the time the club act, probably. New manager will have to have an exceptional run to get CL even including the fact City won’t be there.

I think my frustration with Carrick is continuing to do the same thing, play the same players, and expect a different outcome.

I know they aren't like for like players etc - but how about say trying Lacey from the start, Zirkzee from the start etc - just try something different for once. Just do something different for a game and see what happens. Can't get much worse...

I think this is the biggest criticism I have. It's ok to persist with a selection when you are trying to build a partnerships but its another to stick with something that is not working despite efforts but also that has been proven by previous coaches to be limiting. Unfortunately the board and presumably Carrick himself felt that the 3rd place affirmed that the squad was not requiring a complete overhaul. Of course the truth was always that it did becuase this is essentially the same squad that finished 15th.

Fans are fickle though. I've seen people on here laying into Yoro and Heaven when they should be the future of the defence especially when Shaw, Maguire and Martinez are all out of contract in the summer. The board have only shown the capability to be ruthless with the dinner ladies and not the squad overhaul. They should have bought someone like Calvin Bassey as a young but experienced CB.

I also agree it would have been good to see more of Lacey. Part of me thinks you have to trust the coach who sees these players every day and has presumably has the players development as a priority but frankly when your options to change a game are so limited then you do have to question his wisdom. Zirkzee I think we've all seen enough of. Mason Mount too. Those players just need to be moved on. To be honest its utterly criminal how weak our bench is. Remember when Cole and Yorke started only be replaced by Sheringham or Solskjaer?

The problem is that the club isn't prepared to do the things that need to be done to break the cycle. The season in 15th should have been the time but they flunked that also. It would have been better last season if we had only managed 10th. Then we would have a better coach and probably more of a squad investment.

What a weird time to stubbornly stick by a manager. If it was like prime Pep going through a bad spell, fair enough. But it’s Michael ‘he knows the club, ya know!’ Carrick…

Obviously they can’t sack themselves, but my god…

In all.fairness I don't think Carrick is the biggest problem at Utd.

If he was they wouldn't have been in very similar positions over the past x number of years.

I'm not saying he's not currently a problem but think that statement is pretty spot on.

I've listened to what Ornstein said and he's really just repeating what's already been reported. They've written off the games between now and the break and then we'll see what happens.

We all know Carrick isn't the only issue, just a pretty big one. :p

It’s the only issue that could be changed. They’re not going to do anything radical to the executive side of thing mid-season, they barely have the balls to change coach, hence the delays for ETH and Carrick. I can see Wilcox ‘possibly’ going in the summer, but even that seems unlikely, which is bizarre for a guy with his track record here and relative lack of experience prior too.

The players need a disciplinarian who the owners back. It no coincidence the last time they had reasonable success was after Jose had beaten them into shape and then ole took over to put some fun back. Effectively ole rode the coat tails of what Jose had instilled into them until the do what you want and have fun attitude became too much and they forgot what was drilled into the team/players.
Ten Hag came to the club with a history of being a disciplinarian.
