Carrick signs until 2014... and it isn't with another club

What an absolute joke.

I know Fergie 'trusts' the squad and wants to develop them together as a unit, but surely even he must realise it must be time to let him go at this stage, as a nice guy/great servant of the club/what-have-you he is?

I guess that's our midfield weighed down with his mediocrity for the next few years then. All I can hope is that his poor form for the past two years was because he doubted his future at the club...

*straws fall from hand*

Roll on Gibson until 2015.

Doubt Fergie's competency below.

What ever happened to Michael Carrick? He was outstanding for Tottenham, and pretty good in his first year with you lot.

And then... nothing.

I dont know whats up with him as well, maybe hes become complacent, or hes not being made to feel special enough.

Just like the Evra deal done a month or so back - it could well be the player paying Utd back by signing a new contract so to extract the maximum value when he gets sold (I think Evra is a great player, probably one of Utd's best over the last 3 seasons on average, but I dont hold out much hope of him staying beyond the summer " I love Utd but hate Manchester" was a recent quote attrib. to Evra)

Fergie has converted Carrick into a holding player - which he never was at Spurs (more a deep-laying attacking mid) ever since Hargreaves was known not to be coming back any time soon (about 2 years ago).

I agree Utd need new (experienced) blood in the midfield (dont forget Cleverly will be in the squad next season, which will help enormously and maybe a few different kids but someone who knows the CL and preferably a player who has won leagues / cups previously

I adore PS as a player but Im really hoping he DOESNT sign a new contract, as that should force SAF to buy some experience. With Giggs , who cant play anywhere near every game, being the most experienced and then Carrick, another central mid would be necessary without question. (Even allowing for Anderson & Park)

Valencia and Nani are both wide players (and sometimes so is Park) so thats why Im not including those with the above).

The only reason they are keeping him on is the impending retirement of Scholes, there isn't anyone else that can pass a ball in the midfield and he's struggled with that lately.

I don't rate him, but I guess with the home grown ruling, and some impending retirements it had to be done. Thought he'd be sold to a club like Sunderland/Fulham etc, though.

Spoken like a true Leeds boy.

:D

'Arry really rates him also - so going back to Spurs might be possible (although they have a pretty decent midfield all around, in fact over the whole midfield they probably have the best average quality than the present top 5)

Bale, Modric, VdV, Huddlestone, Lennon (not any particular order) - is probably the best midfield one team could put out, although singular positions there are better individuals

I also had an RSS come up on my phone, its not there now, but it was something like, @Carrick says:

"Carrick calls for response
Man Utd midfielder won't dwell on Chelsea defeat"

WHo's he going to call? 999, 'hello this is michael, i feel like ive just been raped, need assistance immediately'

i mean, seriously?!

Like Marmite - you either love or loathe Carrick

Unlikely SAF would have sanctioned a long deal if he wasnt doing the job asked (however much people want to hate him on here)

Perhaps we should make this the Manchester United midfielders contract renewal thread. Fletcher's just signed a new four year deal according to a headline on BBC Sport.

22 First Team appearances seems to disagree with you.

Phil Neville had 59 for England. Not because he was good but because playing for a high profile club does that for you.

Infact Wesley Ginger brown has 23 England caps.

But I meant in a present sense that he isn't first or second choice centers mid for the England, which he is not.

I think its been (officially) confirmed that Owen Hargreaves is leaving in the summer (on a free of course).

Good luck to him in the future (as well as M Owen whio is also likely to leave)

Im still praying for Gibson to be sold (Im not sure how long he has on his contract though, so I doubt it would be for much ££ if he was sold)

Majority of his club appearances over the last few years have been at Full back (although more recently he has moved back into the centre for some games - like he will be at Anfield at the weekend)
