Carrick signs until 2014... and it isn't with another club

Fletcher + Anderson is clearly our best pairing, both players are capable of running for starters.

Doesn't strike me as a natural pairing. The biggest strength of both of them is their energy and the way they get around the pitch but I wouldn't say either has the positional sense/discipline for them to play alongside each other in a 4-4-2.

Even at the age Scholes is at, doesn't he still do everything Carrick can do but better? Looking from the outside, I'd say a CM pairing of Scholes + Anderson is Utd's strongest, with Fletcher coming in if you decided to play 3 in the middle.

When Scholes came on a couple of weeks ago for Carrick I think it was, it was just plain embarrasing how much quicker he was around the pitch than Carrick.

Carrick is just slow at everything these days.

Its not just that, its how likely scholes is to run to the half way line, lose his marker, then run back to the defence and collect the ball off them and THEN distribute it for them... to save Smalling or Vidic from punting it long.

Carrick, just turns his back on them and runs away, he should be ensuring he gets the ball from defence and then make a pass. He doesnt seem interested at all.

Scholes & tackling should never be used in the same sentence (without horrific results) :D (otherwise you are probably correct, but then Scholes is probably one of the best passers in the league even now)

1st half against Chelsea and first 20 minutes on Sunday (which admittedly was very end-to-end) Carrick was actually doing some really good - maybe not brilliant admittedly - offensive passing

As soon as Utd start chasing the game, Carrick wilts drastically

Not exactly. I was saying that Scholes plays the same role as Carrick but does it better. And I didn't think anybody would attribute tackling with Carricks game.

Oh without a doubt. I think that outside of Gerrard & Lampard, England really do have a mediocre second string of midfielders all around the age of 28,29,30,31 who are all good but never really excel at anything, Messers, Carrick, Barry and countless others please step forward.

Check out Conor Coady in the Youth Cup game on Sunday. Big things expected from him; being compared to Gerrard already.

Don't turn this into a Liverpool thread :p

Come to think of it I'm surprised it hasn't been closed yet.

1. It's gone off topic
2. It's a United thread :p

Would Carrick make a better CB than a DM?

I just mention this since if I recall the only thing he did right in the game against Bolton was make a few last-ditch blocks in the box, everything else was the usual back-passing, inaccurate hoofs forward, and losing the ball. He mentioned recently that Phelan said he might be pressed into doing it since we have so many central defenders out, and remarked: "I don't fancy that", but if the shoe fits...

He also slipped in the area on two different occasions lol (one when he was playing instead of Evans, and one before the sending off)

He also hates playing as a defender/ Centre-half , so I cant see it happening ever (on a permanent basis), and if anything the centre-half's have to be better in possession than he is and more relaxed on the ball (Even Smalling is very at ease on the ball coming out of defence)

Carricks contract is purely for continuity if he stays and to up his value if he leaves. Nothing more.

In the three title winning seasons he was one of the best passers in the league. He NEVER gave the ball away. He got it, gave it to Ronaldo and carnage ensued.

In the last two years he has rarely if ever passed it to a team mate.

I was a huge fan of Carrick but its impossible to justify him as anything more than a squad player.
