I have a theory about this, essentially I believe that humans have historically selected cats for breeding by their ability to catch mice, except we measured that based on how often we witnessed the mousing occurring. This caused the behaviour to bring mice home to become especially common, overriding the instinct to actually kill and eat their prey in a significant number of cats. Probably loads of reasons why this is totally wrong, but I enjoy it so whatever :p

Haha that's a new theory to me, I was always lead to believe it's that domestic cats aren't really hungry so they catch for fun and bring it home to play with basically.

One of ours is a cat that was born in house from sort of feral country cats. Her parents and their gang (like 100s, maybe 1000s, maybe+) of cats live and hunt in the hollows of dry stone walls in the lancs/yorks/cumbria border. They give birth in a friend's barn conversion up there. They have to find homes for 10 or so kittens a year. She's a proper killer but only if she's hungry. Killed, dead. Eaten. We live next to a graveyard so she's quite fat unfortunately.

The other one is proper domestic and is a showoff. A proper athlete. He catches everything and hardly ever kills.

I used to go to a farm when I was I kid, they had about 10 cats that were all half feral. They kept the barns free of mice. Some would come and live in the house.

One of mine is a stone cold killer. The other would be as well.. If he could be bothered to actually wake up and drag himself outdoors.

We have an old house and live surrounded by woods and fields, plus we keep chickens. So furry murderers are an essential. It's a bugger when they bring their toys home though.

Two shorthaired ginger/bengal mixes. We regularly get treated to 'presents', this week I had a dead collared dove delivered, last week a gold finch and mice we get all the time. The worst ones have been two almost fledging baby birds in one mouth (I assume taken from the nest) and another time a live squirrel deposited in the living room which was not fun to catch!

Our cat, when we had her was a bit of sadist. She’s bring us presents, but seldom actually killed them, just wounded them enough to stop them escaping, then would just toy with then on the lawn. On many an occasion I’d have to go and give some poor bird or small mammal and the occasional frog the good news with a shovel….

We tried putting collars with bells on her numerous times, but she’d always find a way out of them by the time she came home.

We probably get one thing brought into the house a week (that we know about). As well as dead birds and mice we've also had frogs, they usually just bring them in and let them go though. They make such an odd screaming noise. Also had a foot long sausage and a old ham hock from somewhere when they were kittens, no idea how they managed to drag them into our garden and through the cat flap.

Don't get anything from our cat. She is out-hunted by the ginger psycho two doors down.

Well me and my big gob ... got home earlier from a walk to be told she had proudly presented a dead mouse !

I'm still going to blame ginger psycho - he probably left it after getting bored and she picked it up.

Nothing. She's 10 now and she never cared. Once in a while she'll chase a bird or a fly etc but a spider can run right in front of her nose and she'll ignore it. Never been a playful cat either just very chilled out and happy.

Thought this thread was about the guy down south who has just been convicted of a cat murder spree.
