Census 2021

I just completed mine there as I live on my own so went ahead and done it.

Why do they need to know the address of my employer and even a brief description of my job role?

The whole thing made me feel a little uncomfortable tbh. Asking a bit too much personal info.

No need for that level of detail surely?

I've just completed ours. I have no issues providing that level of information if it is in anyway used to determine government funding for schools / hospitals etc.

Our local residents group has loads of history about the local area and a huge amount of it is pieced together based on old census information and its fascinating. I'd hate for that not to be the case in 100 / 200 years time.

What I don't understand is they already know who your employer is via HMRC. Why can't they just pull the information they need from them and other sources.

Google already know more than a census is likely to collect. They know you, not who you say you are - so arguably Google is already a bit scarier.

Google might mine my data, but at least they won’t leave it behind in a taxi/on a train/in a pub like HM Government employees have in the past.

Gender now and at birth is on the census, so is if you're homosexual or straight.

Who do you think you are is going to be interesting in 100 years.

Especially if your kids never knew.
What if you don't want to identify as any of those options, or just want to remain private.

It's supposed to be a snapshot in time for 21st March. If you move jobs but haven't been put on payroll information submitted to HMRC, then as far as they are concerned, they aren't your employer.

Similarly, there's plenty of people with less straightforward pay / tax situations where they might have multiple employments or they may get paid via different companies etc.

I think people massively overestimate the accuracy of information held by government departments when it comes to individual circumstances.

If you have friends or family members with accessibility issues, there are local census support centres which will complete the census over the phone for them.

It says those questions are voluntary - though it seems someone on Twitter has apparently chosen to answer using some "new" gender identity and sexuality:

edit - embedded the wrong tweet there somehow:

If you're not religious, don't put Jedi or any other made up religion (yes all religion is made up) on it as a joke, it still counts towards being classed as religious and as such, decisions for things in the future are made based partly off the back of that data.
What decision for things are made based on the religious questions? Generally curious.

Ours came in the regular snail mail, I completed it in maybe five minutes.
Nowt? Do people really use that word?
Oops, as you were, I’ve just noticed that you’re from up north, sorry chuck.

Thanks that's bob on....just the local lingo, no worries petal.

I'll get back to my chips and gravy now, might have a muffin with it as well (not serious just written for the lols......it's too early in the day yet).

The local council may decide to put a statue of the Dalai Llama or Darth Vader in the town square to replace William III on his horse.
