CEX shop

Just been had by my local CeX shop today, noticed a 2GB stick of DDR2 RAM in the window for £3, bargain I thought perfect for fixing up an old machine. Got home tried to insert it into a slot and noticed the notch didn't line up, googled the serial number and it turns out that it's server RAM. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd have known but it clearly stated "Memory - Desktop" on the display stand and also on my receipt!

Shysters.

I would chalk that down to ignorance rather than deceit - if it's the shorter wider rectangle it's laptop memory and if it's the longer narrower rectangle it's desktop memory.

I'd also chalk it down to "it's too cheap for us to bother testing it, who cares?"

CEX have their uses - cheap DVD’s so long as you don’t want a recent release which tend to cost more than new! - I’ve bought a fair few computer parts from them, one was a 780ti which I sold with the receipt on the MM here, it turned out to be faulty and the guy who bought it off me got a refund by taking my receipt back to his local shop so fair play there.

The staff in my local store are very helpful when I go in with my 11year old and he asks endless questions about whatever game he wants and they even tell him to go and make sure it’s not cheaper in Game knowing it’s his birthday / Christmas/ pocket money he’s spending.

And whoever runs their faceache Page isn’t a censorship Nazi, they recently shared a post about something or other and I made a comment about them charging more for a second hand 1080ti than Overclockers sell them new for, I even posted a direct link to the item on OC/UK and expected it to be taken down ASAP, no, when I checked a few days later the post was still there despite admin posts further down the page and me getting numerous “likes”

Not all bad in my experience, very hit & miss depending on store though.

With this thread in mind I walked into my first CEX ever today.

It felt like I was going to a Laser Quest which hadn't been decorated since the late 80s, half expecting to find some greasy kitchen selling half cooked over-priced burgers in one corner.

That said, great for picking up old DVDs, perhaps finding a gem of a game too.

Love this thread :D
I used to go in one in Leeds but it was only to check out the chav milfs with their 6 kids. It smelt a tramps bed in there so left sharpish

I sold my phone to them.

Paid average ebay sale price and no hassle.

Like any shop some things are better value than others. I did once pick up a bargain gpu from there. Maybe they don't mis-price things like they used to any more.

Walked past the one in Newcastle this morning as they were opening and noticed they had a 2.5" 1TB HDD for £18. I thought I'd grab it just, just to stick in the PC to back-up some photos and other misc. crap. Even though I'm still barred I had a quick scan to see if the manager was about, I couldn't see him so took the risk and made a beeline for the counter - trying to get in and out as quick as possible. Just my luck that the till played up and the girl behind the counter shouted for the manager to come and sort it out.

No HDD for me. :(

haha
Oops, I meant, shame ;)
Could always stand outside & say "Hey, mister. Buy us a HDD please" like kids do for cigs :p

Just an update... I took it back today and luckily they had gotten another DDR2 in so exchanged it for the correct one. They claimed it had come in from another store so had never tested it and just assumed it was desktop memory. Whatever... All is good in the end. :)

That is a load off my mind.

What?! Why would you be barred from a CEX?

Long story short. They sold my Mrs some dodgy goods and then refused to refund when I called them out on it. Even though I was being very calm and polite they threatened to phone the police to remove me from the shop. I told 'em to knock themselves out, and when the police arrived and had been informed of the situation they took my side and I walked away with a full refund. :D

I thought They weren't going to refund/exchange me at first as they told me to "have a look around the shop while we look into it" at first but I just carried on standing at the counter. It was a pretty cut and dry case so not sure what they needed to look into.

Any CEX I ever walked into smelt of stale, wet carpet.

I used to browse but primarily just to kill time while the missus shopped. I never had any intention of purchasing anything.

Went into Ann Summers, spent a bloody fortune... Atleast I get some fun from that though, CEX on the other hand, especially the one in North Shields (If your from Newcastle you will know) full of unemployed mongoloids pricing up what they will buy their 25 kids on money day.... Then there is me browsing things I have 0 intention of buying, seeing how expensive things are and maybe being tempted by 1 or 2 things, atleast they paid Grade A condition on my old phone though, I mean it wasnt a complete dud or anything... Lol... If they offer it... Take it and run

I've bought a few blu-rays for between 1-4 quid. Never had a problem ripping them so no complaints. I wouldn't spend more because 6.66 will get you brand new disks that have been out for awhile as part of the 3 for 20 quid deal at HMV.

My friend has given a PC by a work colleague to look at last week. He had built it himself but it kept on BSOD at the Windows installation. I got called, advised him what to do, even got the motherboard swapped out. No joy, in the end he asked me to look at it. We did everything, swapped HDD, RAM, PSU the load. Still no joy.
He got on the phone to him and asked where the parts came from, everything was purchased new from one place.....apart from the CPU, it came from CEX. I told him, to get them to return it back to CEX for a refund and buy a brand new CPU from else where. They did, new CPU came, installed and computer works fine.

Bet that faulty 6800K will go back on their pile to sell to some other mug.
