Chain Rust

If memory serves me, I paid about £160 for a gold Tsubaki X Ring chain and two Renthal gold sprockets inc fitting. But that was about 3 or 4 years ago. It's lasted all that time because I don't do big miles as the bike is purely a toy now and also the fact that I've had a Scottoiler fitted to it since I bought the bike. Chain has virtually no stretch in it and is as good as new. In all that time I've had to adjust it perhaps 5 or 6 times.

Yeah, el cheapo oil from Tescos or similar will do fine, a small bottle is all you should need if you go down the "soak overnight" route.

Will definitely have to get a Scottoiler when I get my big bike, they sound excellent :)

Thanks very much for the help, think I will go for the soaking it route as the back end above the wheel needs a good clean, lots of hard to reach places that get particularly muddy in the weather we've had recently.

I just recently tried Silkolene chain lube as a last resort before moving away from bike specialized chain lubes because imo they're useless (as chain starts to corrode overnight after the slightest bit of damp/wetness!), and tbh it seems to be miles better than, Wurth and Castrol.

Next time I run out though, I'm gonna to get myself some of this. I used it on my pushbike about 5 months ago which regularly gets left outside a few weeks at a time and has stood In pouring rain and snow, yet the chain still looks like I greased it yesterday!. And it's anti-fling so It should stick to the chain.

Proper farmers stuff :p. Does sound good though.

I've just found 500ml of Wurth cleaner + 500ml of Wurth lube for a very good price.

Hmm, which to get!

Ok, no luck with the kinked chain unfortunately.

I have found a chain & sprocket kit for the bike for £35 which I could then ask the shop to fit for me and pay the labour (if they're happy to do that, will need to speak to them).

Is £35 a bit cheap for a chain & sprocket kit? I don't want to put anything on there that's not going to last or perform nicely.

I know Draegar mentioned it is quite a hassle to fit chain & sprocket myself, but I can't see the bike shop charging me any less than ~£80 to do it for me. I'm having to be very tight with my money at the moment, so if I can do it myself then I will. Can anyone recommend a decent splitter/rivet tool? Or is it really not worth even trying myself?

Meh, saying that my next bike will probably have and endless chain anyway so I might end up spending £50 on a rivet/splitter tool that I'll never use again! Hmmmm

Thanks.

There's a couple of things I'm apprehensive about doing on my bike and the chain and sprockets is one of the jobs. I'll do it as I did the front pads the other day and that was far easier than I had built it up in my mind as I expect the chain and sprockets would be.

pity u were not closer .. its a quick easy job .. more so on a 125 .. but £35 sounds about right for a 125

I'm guessing it's just a case of having the right tools?

Problem is, a chain rivet/split tool isn't cheap and would likely only be used this once as the bike I will be getting will surely have an endless chain.

Can you recommend any rivet/splitter tools?

well a lot of 125's dont even use a proper split link but i normally just remove the chain with and angle grinder/dremmel .. do the sprockets and if u dont have the tool to fit a new link 2 hammers work just as well (i have the tool )

Just make sure you count how many links before ordering the chain to save the hassle cutting links off it (use some tipex then count the links )

most 125's have a link like this

Hmm my chain looks nothing like that. I better check mines ok :p

Get yourself some castrol racing chain lube frome halfords . Its a non fling verry thick oil based lube .
The worth lube is good at its job but will let damp penetrate under harsh conditions

From my experience the Castrol wasn't that great, didn't seem to stop corrosion at all unless I peppered my chain with it, which is costly, I just used Silkolene recently and havent needed to re-apply for a few weeks now.

I have to agree, I picked myself up a can of the Castrol lube a few weeks ago when I fitted my new chain and sprocket, I keep my bike outside, granted, but I've never seen a chain corrode so quickly! Might try peppering the chain more frequently.

Might pick up a can of Silkolene come payday and give that a try.

Yeah my bike sits outside in all weathers too, but this Silkolene seems to be alright, if that lets me down I'm gonna give that Sparex stuff a go, plus, it's a great price.
