Champions League Draw 11:00 Today

Ibra has caught me by surprise a bit, he seems to be at the same level as Messi in terms of vision, touch and movement. They're on the same page and I'd probably soil myself if I had to play against them. Still, what they paid for him was just too much for any footballer and I'll maintain that ..

Its interesting really - Beckham got bought from Man Utd for £25m (even if you allow for the Fergie nuisance/media factor to be thrown in - as this was causing a lot of grief at the time - tops would be £30m) and its been stated by Real's management team that they sold enough shirts to cover majority of that fee - without on field team performance coming into it (which temporarily must have made RM a good few million more over the period he was there)... and going from memory Im not sure if there was anyone else around to the same extent who could generate this level of funds for any club, so he must have been worth it without question (is that £40m in todays money?)

Ronaldo was sold for £80m - and I wouldnt bet against most of that fee being regained in other ways by the team apart from onfield performance (a bit harder to judge as Kaka is also there who would be a huge draw to fans also). Real Madrid seem to be genius at doing this even when their onfield exploits arent doing so well

Even harder to judge is how much Eto'o was worth (wasnt he in the last year of his contract at Barca?) but if thats the case it must be at least £10-15m - which makes Ibra worth over £50m easy (ok Hleb was also incl as a loan deal but given the costs involved surely this was minimal) and however much you love the club and love the player I cant see him getting the same "adoration" value from the public /media

As a "pure" football transfer - I would suggest your comment is undoubtedly right, but with the media (and fans going so crazy in Spain over a few players) part coming into play - Im not so sure

And yet everyone over looks the work rate barca as a team put in. Ive seen them press and within seconds they've taken the ball from you. Not as effective as last year but still fave to win cl.

I don't think it gets overlooked, it's pretty clear that what separates them is how they're excellent in attack and defence

In Europe Barca do get away with quite a lot of the fear factor, well till a couple new teams this year had nothing to fear and just attacked them.

Their actual back 4 isn't that great, Puyol can have superb games but frequently has poor games, prone to mistakes, Alves isn't great defensively at all. The reason Barca do so well overall defensively is their front 3 and midfield 3 work VERY hard to stop the ball getting beyond them. When you do get beyond their midfield though, they concede quite often. The spanish league knows that, Barca concede pretty frequently for a league winning side.

THe pace in the attack and the support from deeper in midfield just gives everyone so much space to create though. Its pretty simply maths, play a lone striker with two wide men who only stay wide, and overly defensive midfielders who don't get forward and you have 4 defenders dealing with one real attacking. WIth Barca you basically get 6 people all completely willing to run into the box, 4/5 on most attacks, that means the defenders have more people to deal with, more runs to track, and more space for people to run into.

They've got to be favourites because they do have so many good players who are consistantly in good form. Chelsea if they can pull off the same stifling, disciplined defensive gameplay against them and catch a break with a goal could beat them. But then Drogba's form this year has been based on Chelsea not playing overly defensive, they won't be as practiced at that if they meet Barca this year. This years Utd side has even less chance of beating them, Arsenal haven't got a hope in hell.

If Ronaldo/Kaka were fit and had their best games ever, they have a chance of outscoring Barca, not a great chance though.

I've watched most of the Barca games this year and for most of the games they appear to just try to score the perfect goal every time, they don't really seem to care that there is an opponent on the field. Some of their play (between Ibra and Messi) has been sensational

really i thought they have been quite poor in the cl this season, lucky to top the group, they played well at home when inter came to town, apart from that they were poor

Not really. Even when they got beat off Rubin they still had 70% possession and Rubin had something like two shots on target and scored from both. It was the same as last season except they had a little less luck/finishing ability.

Dynamo Kiev didn't really attack them much either home or away either.

Everton haven't got an easy ride there in the Europa League. And Fulham have the possibilty of Juventus in the next round, Roy Hodgson said he wanted Juventus during the week. It could happen for them.

Absolutley, if they get thru this round and beat Juventus, theres no reason why they cant go and win it. They'll certainly have the confidence!

The Chelsea and Man U games are magical ties!
