Change to hybrid ?

Speed read the video saw an MPH peak of 42mph i think.... Theres an Insight video doing 150mpg over 1500 tank. Thanks not a real world example.

I get 400 miles in a city with stop start driving for £30-£35.

On a motorway at a constant speed of say 65mph you will easily get 500 miles for £35.
you understand the difference between a hybrid stoping and starting where is has a benefit versus motorway where its just a engine pulling a battery along right? Aero is a big energy killer so dont assume a hybrid is massively more mpg just sat at a constant speed. There is the atkinson cycle benefit on the toyota engines though i admit.

£35 buys you 30 litres of unleaded fuel. To get 500 miles out of that, you'd need to be able to sustain 75mpg.

I can think of virtually no car that can sustain 75mpg on the motorway, let alone 'easily' in order to 'easily get 500 miles for £35'.

Especially not one with a 1.8 litre petrol engine.

400 miles of £35 is far more realistic and is around 58mpg. That’s what you would expect on a run from a hybrid car.

It’s utterly miles away from your original post. :p

There is no pay a Prius gets 85mpg on a long motorway run and a diesel would be more efficient in that use case.

That's city driving.

I said a long run.

I get 400 miles for £35 driving around Glasgow. Stopped at lights, roundabouts constant acceleration and braking and driving at lowish speeds.

Going on the motorway to London it was 3 years back I got there on a single tank with fuel to spare iirc which lasted 2-3 days of local driving. So it did anywhere between 450-500 for £35.

Which isn't miles off what I said.

On the motorway the electric motor is constantly working too. It's not just the petrol engine. It regularly gets used and turns off too it's random.

Because this is exactly the environment where the hybrid system is working for you, rather than against you. Unlike the Motorway.

Its still not making power out of no where, that constant energy moving is not 100% efficient. The MG1 and MG2 are engineering masterpieces how they work in the Prius powertrain but they don't beat physics or Aerodynamics

Yes i have, I also did 700miles to and from Scotland and average was 70mpg in a mk1 Honda insight, that required effort and was a Honda engineering exercise with a very low drag car with covered rear wheels. You wont just rock up with 85mpg in a Prius /Ct200

Does the Prius have a lean burn mode? The Insight was able to get massive mpg by using the magic lean burn mode, and that was entirely based on the ICE and aerodynamics.

If the hybrid part of your Prius is charging while cruising on the motorway, your overall efficiency is going down. Petrol => Battery => Motor => Wheels is less efficient than Petrol => Wheels. The only way the hybrid part improves efficiency is where you are forced to slow down anyway and some of that momentum can be recovered.

It's 75 mpg by my calculations.

35 divided by 1.15 divided by 4.54 equals 6.7 gallons

500 divided by 6.7 equals 74.62 mpg

400 miles is 59.7 mpg. I do sometimes only get 360 miles with city driving. Just depends on what type of driving and conditions.

The way it works from what I can see on the computer is;

Roads aren't perfectly level. As you stick it on cruise control to stay at 50/60/70 depending on the stretch of road.

It will when going uphill or level switch between using just the engine or engine and motor or just the motor. When going downhill or sometimes even level it charges the battery. It also charges the battery when slowing down or braking.
